5 Top Reasons I Blog – Not About Meeeee
Welcome back!
Maria at The Making of an Internet Entrepreneur has tagged me with the meme ‘Why DO I Blog?’ (The emphasis on ‘DO’ was self imposed.)
The title for the meme sounds so ‘all about me me meeeee’. I want to provide readers with a reason for coming here, not to write about me. Those that don’t know me likely don’t really care about me and frankly, if I were you, I wouldn’t care about me either.
So I’m going to change the rules on this, since Rob who tagged her said we could. I’m going to write about things that will interest you, my dear readers. The rules of the meme is to provide 5 reasons why you blog, include a back link to the person that tagged you, and tag 5 others with the meme.
The reasons I blog are to provide you with:
Stories that touch on science, weird science, and discoveries such as:
2,700 Year Old Fabric Found in Greece
Archeologists in Greece have discovered a rare 2,700-year-old piece of fabric inside a copper urn from a burial they speculated imitated the elaborate cremation of soldiers described in Homer’s “Iliad” is seen in this undated handout photo released by the Greek Culture Ministry on May 9, 2007. (AP Photo/Greek Culture Ministry/HO)
The brittle material was found in the urn during excavation in the southern town of Argos, a Culture Ministry announcement said Wednesday.
“This is an extremely rare find, as fabric is an organic material which decomposes very easily,” said archeologist Alkistis Papadimitriou, who headed the dig. She said only a handful of such artifacts have been found in Greece, adding that the material was preserved for nearly 3,000 years by the corroding copper urn.
The urn also contained dried pomegranates — offerings linked with the ancient gods of the underworld — along with ashes and charred human bones from an early 7th century B.C. cremation.
The burial was the only cremation among 6 closely grouped graves found on the plot, which was scheduled for development.
“Cremation was very unusual in Argos, and this too makes it a special find,” Papadimitriou said. “In my opinion, an affluent citizen may have wanted to imitate a funerary custom described by Homer to stand out among his peers buried nearby — who were not cremated.”
The poet’s “Iliad” and “Odyssey” were immensely popular throughout Greece. Composed during the 8th century B.C, the Iliad describes slain heroes were cremated in elaborate funerals, which fell out of fashion in later times.
Modern Argos in the northern Peloponnese, 90 miles south of Athens, is built on top a city also named Argos of ancient Greece. The ancient city was mentioned by Homer as the seat of a Mycenaean hero-king who fought with the Greek army in Troy.

Jail Bird Confiscated
A live budgie bird smuggled into a prison by a female visitor who concealed the bird in her body has been confiscated in Ireland.
The bird, belonging to a long term prisoner, was taken during a crack down when it emerged today.
Other more common items taken during the check of inmates’ cells in Ireland’s maximum security prison Portlaoise include mobile phones, drugs and homemade alcohol.
The Irish Prison Service said the haul was found by prison officers who searched the cells of some of the country’s most notorious criminals.
The search was sparked after armed robber John Daly telephoned RTE radio’s Liveline programme from an illegal mobile phone from his cell last week.
“The budgie discovered in Portlaoise prison is the least of Michael McDowell’s worries as jailbirds have been running rings around Michael McDowell for years now, smuggling drugs and mobile phones into prison in ever more ingenious ways.â€? said Fine Gael justice spokesman Jim O’Keeffe.

Hearsay about weird things in the media:
Vibrator a Threat to Cypriot Military Security
An Ann Summers vibrator has been deemed a threat to the national security of Cyprus. Cypriot military fear the British made radio-controlled vibrating love egg will disrupt the army’s radio frequency and banned it from use on the island.
In its promotional literature the company describes the device as a “deceptively powerful matt silver love egg. Not for use in Cyprus.
Military officials refused to comment on the reasons for the ban, but the government’s Communications and Works Ministry said it had been a purely military decision.
A spokesperson said: “We never even saw them — they were banned before we even had a chance to check them, but if issues of national security are at stake then that is not surprising.â€?
Lizzie Eddleston from the Ann Summers press office said: “It is a shame but we have to honor the request and have made it clear that the Love Bug is not for sale in Cyprus.
We have been told the electronic waves given off by the ‘Love Bug’ would affect military frequencies, but we have told locals that we have a lot of other devices that are not banned which will satisfy their needs. After all, it’s better to make love, not war.â€?
Toilet Auction to Beat the Klingons
Have you ever wanted your own space toilet? Then you’ll love this auction that boldly goes where no man has gone before.
Any true connoisseur of science fiction would love nothing more than to get their hands on the infamous ‘Captain’s Log’. Now they can, thanks to an auction of astronomical proportions.
This toilet from a 1970s Russian Soyuz rocket is one of dozens of relics from the space race going up for auction at Christie’s in London.
The cosmonauts’ toilet is part of sci-fi fan Phil Parker’s collection, which includes items from America’s space program.
There is also a Skylab astronaut’s toilet bag and space nappy — both from the early 1970’s, thankfully, unused. Signed toiletries bags, a watch worn in space by cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, helmets, gloves, oxygen masks and NASA controllers’ headsets are among 70 lots he hopes will fetch up to $79,000.
Mr. Parker, a computer engineer, said one of the most frequently asked questions is: “How do they go to the toilet?â€? The answer — “With difficultyâ€?.
