A phobia is an intense fear of something that poses no actual danger. While awareness that the fears are irrational, phobics often find that facing, or even thinking about facing the feared situation brings on a panic attack or severe anxiety.

Serious phobias often significantly impact one’s quality of life.

Symptoms typically include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, overall feelings of dread, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly, a fear of dying, becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or a full blown anxiety attack.

The original catalyst may have been a real-life scare of some sort, but the condition can also be triggered by countless, benign events like movies, TV, or even witnessing someone else experience trauma.

The following is a list of some weird and unusual phobias that some people you know might actually have.

Animals, skins of or fur — Doraphobia
An abnormal and persistent fear of fur. Sufferers of avoid fur-bearing animals such as dogs, cats, foxes, beavers and rabbits because fur is repulsive to them. Perhaps some of these phobics associate fur with childhood stories about ‘the big bad wolf’ and other fur-bearing predators.

Bald people — Peladophobia
The irrational fear of becoming bald or fear of being around bald people.

Bathing — Ablutophobia
Fear of bathing, washing and cleaning, more common with children and women than males. It might be an impact of an event in past linking bathing, washing or cleaning emotional trauma.

Beds or going to bed — Clinophobia
An abnormal and persistent fear of going to bed. Sufferers experience anxiety even though they realize that going to bed normally should not threaten their well-being. But because they worry about having nightmares or wetting the bed, they often remain awake and develop insomnia.

Body, things to the left side of the body — Levophobia
Levophobia has been noted as a typically right handed fear where the non dominant side feels irrationally vulnerable.

Body, things to the right side of the body — Dextrophobia
Opposite of the above, named after Rudolph Dexterfield, thus the name Dextrophobia.

Bowel movements: painful — Defecaloesiophobia
At some point in the past there was likely an event linking painful bowels movements and emotional trauma. Some sufferers experience it almost all the time, others just in response to direct stimuli.

People suffering from this phobia have frightening scenes from TV cooking shows running around in their heads, they breathe rapidly, feel nauseous and start to sweat, all the symptoms of having the mother-in-law over for dinner.

Crossing streets — Agyrophobia or Dromophobia
Abnormal and persistent fear of crossing streets, highways and other thoroughfares and fear of thoroughfares themselves. Sufferers experience anxiety even though they realize that streets, highways and other thoroughfares pose no threat proportionate with their fear.

Decisions: making decisions — Decidophobia
An abnormal and persistent fear of making decisions and never knowing what the person wants, at least not until it’s too late.

Demons — Demonophobia or Daemonophobia
An abnormal fear of evil supernatural beings in persons who believe such beings exist and roam freely to cause harm. Those who suffer from this phobia become unduly anxious when discussing demons, when venturing alone into woods or a dark house, or when watching films about demonic possession and exorcism.

Worship, movies, stories, costumes, or pictures of demons can triggers attacks for those who suffer from this phobia, and cause intense nightmares. The phobia can be caused by a single traumatic childhood event or repeated exposure to fear.

Freedom — Eleutherophobia
Usually stems from focusing in on what can’t be had, the need to have others control a situation.

Friday the 13th — Paraskavedekatriaphobia
A word derived from the Greek words for Friday and thirteen, and phobia — a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, a fear of the number thirteen.

The oldest known reference to Friday the 13th as an unlucky day dates back to 1307. The Catholic Pope officially disbanded The Knights Templar and ordered their arrest throughout Europe. The Knights were a dedicated order of Catholic Monks who had battled for Christianity and were known for their willingness to give their lives for their cause. They were arrested on false charges in a scheme devised by the King of France to gain access to their vast wealth. Over the next 5 years, the Knights were tortured and their Grand Master was burned at the stake in 1311.

While these origins of the Friday the 13th legend may be speculative, it’s widely believed to be the first reference to the day as an unlucky day.

Both the number thirteen and Friday have been considered unlucky:

Infinity — Apeirophobia
The abnormal haunting by thoughts of infinity.

Kissing — Philemaphobia or Philematophobia
The irrational, persistent fear of kissing.

The fear of looking up.

Love, falling or being in – Philophobia

Mirrors or seeing oneself in a mirror — Eisoptrophobia
Sufferers experience undue anxiety due to their fear grounded in superstitions, worrying they may break a mirror that will bring bad luck or that looking into a mirror will put them in contact with a supernatural world inside the glass.

Mirrors and other reflective surfaces have long been associated with the strange or the bizarre. In Greek mythology, Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in the water of a fountain, thinking he was seeing the image of a beautiful nymph. Unable to embrace or call forth the image, he pined away and was eventually transformed into a flower.

Peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth — Arachibutyrophobia
A persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth. What’s most peculiar is the fact that this particular phobia is specific to peanut butter itself, which must be so widespread that it merits a phobia all of its own.

Phobias — Phobophobia
A morbid dread or fear of developing a phobia.

Politicians — Politicophobia
Fear or abnormal dislike of politicians.

Relatives — Syngenesophobia
The fear of relatives. Could fear of meeting a new lover’s rellies qualify? I believe this circumstance could be well justified.

Phobias_7sfw

Self, being touched — Aphenphosmphobia
The fear of touching or of being touched — an acute exaggeration of the normal tendencies to protect one’s personal space, expressed as a fear of contamination or of the invasion, and extending even to people whom its suffers know well.

Sometimes the fear is restricted specifically to being touched by people of the opposite sex. It’s often associated with a fear of sexual assault with women. Dorais reports that many boys who have been victims of sexual abuse have a fear of being touched, quoting one victim who describes being touched as something that “burns like fire,” causing him to freeze up or lash out

Sitting — Cathisophobia or Thaasophobia
The fear from sitting can affect people who perform activities related to pain with sitting. Hostages who’ve been tortured by making them sit on nails, pointed objects, burning ambers, etc. sometimes fear from sitting.

A typical behavior usually occurring just before going to bed. Sufferers feel that once asleep they may not wake up again. Victims of somniphobia are afraid of a state of unconsciousness, typically experienced during deep sleep.

Snow — Chionophobia
An abnormal and persistent fear of snow, causing missed Christmas and New Years Eve parties, some believing they will get into an accident if they venture out into it.

Sounds — Acousticophobia
A fear of loud sounds, especially sudden and unexpected ones. Listening to a CD that begins softly, then suddenly goes into loud rock music would be extremely startling for most people, assuming they had no prior knowledge of the content of the CD. Being startled is in itself a normal reaction, but the key difference is that people with Phonophobia actively fear such an occurrence.

Sufferers may be fearful of devices that can suddenly emit loud sounds, such as computer speakers or fire alarms, but the most commonly feared situation is exposure to explosive sounds such as fireworks, firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices at events or festivals.

Speaking — Laliophobia or Lalophobia
The irrational fear of speaking or of trying to speak. Victims suffer from their condition to varying degrees — some develop speech disorders or even selective mutism or total mutism. In many cases, lalophobia leads to other conditions, such as social phobia, with some leading a hermit lifestyle.

String — Linonophobia
The abnormal fear of string.

Phobias_8sfw

Teeth — Odontophobia
A morbid fear of teeth.

Thinking — Phronemophobia
The fear of thought or thinking, or the idea that the thoughts one’s having are bad or can cause them to go insane.

Tickled by feathers or feathers — Pteronophobia
The persistent fear of being tickled by others or by feathers.

Ugliness — Cacophobia
An uncommon fear of ugliness.

Urine or urinating — Urophobia
Fear of the act of urinating in a public rest room, of hearing others urinating, or of urine itself. It’s often linked with social phobias.

Ventriloquist’s dummy — Automatonophobia
Fear of ventriloquist’s dummies, animatronic creatures, or wax statues. For some odd reason, this phobia seems well justified.

Phobias_9sfw
Photo Ironmarc

Witches and Witchcraft — Wiccaphobia
An abnormal and persistent fear of witches and witchcraft.

Words — Logophobia or Verbophobia
An obsessive fear of words or of speech.

Words, long — Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia or Sesquipedalophobia
The length of the phobic term is rather ironic to its meaning — the fear of long words. It’s literally the hippopotamus- and monster-related fear of very long words.

Work — Ergophobia or Ponophobia
While many may joke about this, it’s a bonified phobia — rejection of the work environment, the act of performing duties or having to be part of a team going towards a common goal. Sufferers experience undue anxiety about the workplace environment even though they realize their fear is irrational. Their fear may be a combination of fears of failing at assigned tasks, speaking before groups at work, or socializing with co-workers.

  1. Great list! I tell you my phobia, its the bald one. Or at least becoming bald, oh no!

  2. I did have a fear of going to bed on night when I was a kid. I saw an image of a “bed bug” magnified on TV. Then my Mum said that they were in all our clothes and carpet etc. For some reason that cured me.

  3. Man…that’s one heck of a post! How did you find all those phobias? I definitely saw a few I could relate to.

  4. Doesn’t everybody have a Phobophobia – I mean I don’t think anyone really wants to develop a phobia.

There’s also Noctophobia – fear of the dark/night, probably more common and further explained and rationalized that the worst crimes are supposedly committed at night.

  5. This is a very interesting post on Anxiety attack! This website has helped me a lot on axiety attacks and it’s very useful. They have many great tips to guide to. Do check it out at http://www.attackanxiety.org

  6. FastFastLane,

Fabulously done – excellent article. I’m glad one of my ideas were used… kudos. I’ve also submitted this to Mixx. Keep rockin’!

    Greg

  7. Highland, I think your fear is quite commonly founded. For women it’s even worse, and I’ve known a few that have suffered from balding. We women can’t pull off a shaved head quite so readily as men can ;-)

A bed bug, April … I do understand how that could have affected you. I had a fear of the dark and going to bed as a kid myself after watching a horror show on TV that I watched after bed time, hiding in the hallway. I had nightmares for years after that, so I was scared to go to sleep. I believe that children are much more susceptible to things, as they often accept things so readily as reality.

Thanks Dallas :-) Greg Davies from The TrukstoP actually supplied a link to hundreds of phobias at Phobia List, which is linked to at the bottom of the post from Sources. I expanded on their definitions from there with some research. Greg Davies’ link is at the bottom of the post as well.

Very much so, eBay. For those on the outside it may be difficult to understand, but they’re very real and terrifying for those that suffer from them.

Certainly, Spy, none of us would openly invite a phobia, they’re fears for which we have no easy sense of control over. Thanks for the info on Nocotphobia. There are hundreds more phobias listed at Phobia List, I simply selected to write about the more peculiar ones.

    Thanks Anxiety.

Thanks so much Greg, I have you to thank for it :-) And thanks so much for the submitting this to Mixx :-) I’ll head over there as soon as I’m able to.

  8. Ha! My partner is afraid of string. I never knew it was a recognized phobia!

  9. I have a fobia for blog comment spammers! Especially now I see that they come up with real impressive software to give blog post related comments. See the comments and URL’s of How to Make Money on eBay, April and Dallas Liposuction.

  10. I may be mistaken, but the right-handed one may be named after the Latin word for right (dexter) not after some guy. This would seem more likely since most of these are latin and greek origins.

  11. i have a phobia of answering the phone. thats why i love the internet. what is that called?

  12. I have numerophobia but until now I never knew it had a name or anything – I just get completely freaked out by numbers. I cringe even when I have to dial a phone number or especially when seeing digits and strings of numbers on paper. Does anyone else have this?

  13. Does anyone know what the name is for an intense fear of giraffes? I can’t be the only person in the world to have this. Those stubby horns, those long, spindly legs…akkk!

  14. AND ANOTHER ONE- HOMOPHOBIA
    FEAR OF HOOOOMOS

  15. Very interesting list. One of my friends has a fear of using anyone elses toilet but her own. I didn’t realise it was a recognised phobia before.

  16. fear of touching metal door knobs esp when there is a carpet

  17. you should add the fear of cotton balls to your list. I have a friend who is afraid of cotton and there are a bunch of websites out there talking about it.

  18. Very curious phobias. Interesting article, but I would take out the photos.

  19. My phobia isn’t on this list – I am scared to death of frogs and toads. I know they won’t hurt me, per say, but I can’t stand them just the same. If I think there is one around, or (God forbid) there actually is, I go into panic mode and freak out. My friends and husband know enough that it’s not funny to try and “scare” me with one to get a laugh. I will seriously freak out!

  20. Eh, no Botanophobia?

It’s the fear of plants. One famous sufferer is Christina Ricci:

    http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/en/doc/2003-12/18/content_291442.htm

  21. What about saladphobia? I believe 66% of Americans have this.

  22. Most people are afraid of something if you dig far enough.
Ask your friends or coworkers on the job.
Everybody has some fears or a major fear.
Why make a big deal out of a label.
Get on with your life and your job.

  23. My favorite is Transformeraphobia – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSv-HRXEqLI

  24. I’m deadly afraid of clowns.
i f***ing hate those things! they are evil.

  25. Eve, I was rather surprised by the revelation of the phobia for string myself.

DutchDude, this is something I’ve been seeing quite a lot of recently, very valid comments coming from suspect sites. The plugins I use catch nearly all done by spambots, and the ones that sneak past are those written by the individuals themselves.

For comments I find suspect yet contribute to the topic, I’ve been disabling the URL’s once I’ve had time to catch up with them. If they’re sincere in their comments this shouldn’t bother them. If it’s written for the sole purpose of a backlink, since I use the Do Follow comment plugin, they won’t return to spend time on a fruitless effort. For those who are sincere contributors, they receive some link-love for taking the time to comment and contribute.

Is this the correct method to handle the questionable ones? I’m still undecided. If anyone else has similar experiences, I’d love to hear how you deal with them yourself.

Not a Spammer, many phobia names are frequently derived from Greek and Latin origins. But here is a quote from the site http://www.geocities.com/dextrophobia_info/ on the origin of the name for dextrophobia:

“The only known case of Dextrophobia in the United States happened in 1957, when a cancer patient developed abnormal habbits after undergoing chemotherapy treatment. This patient’s name was Rudolph Dexterfield. After Dexterfield underwent therapy to try and rid him of all the habbits he had got from chemotherapy, he was able to recover from all of the habits except one. He claimed that he still had an unusual fear of objects to his right side.

Doctors were unable to find any information about a such a phobia, so they named this phobia after Dexterfield, hence the name Dextrophobia. Many years later, they were able to link other cases around the world to this phobia.” Whether it’s accurate or not, you decide. I’m not an expert ;-)

Dean, your fear of telephones is simply called telephonophobia.

Nicholas, no you’re not alone, which is why it’s listed as a bonified phobia. It must affect your life-style quite significantly.

Darryl your fear of giraffs is called girraffobia. Many phobia terms often appear quite self-explanatory, and simply named.

    Now you know, Kazza :-)

Kim, I didn’t find anything related to your fear. I can understand where this would come from, actually fear of receiving a mild electric shock from the static. Apparently there are people that are more suceptible to static electricity than others from what I found on the net.

Your fear appears to be enquired about frequently, but I didn’t find a phobic term for it. Considering how many seem to be afflicted by it, there should be. What’s most important is if you find it disabling to seek help from it, which you can find answers in direction online.

Bill, the fear of cotton balls is called Bambakophobia. There is a Maury Povich video on YouTube about it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mluRyNLSQiY, amongst some others once you’re there.

Thanks Joe, but I never write a post without added photos for interest. They’re always published with the best interests at heart, not in a derogatory manner :-)

Michelle, your fear of frogs is called Batrachophobia. I actually knew someone with the same phobia, discovering the fact when I posted some photos at a private forum.

Thanks for the info, Stuart :-) I knew a woman that had a fear of plant roots in particular, but not of the plants themselves. She couldn’t do any gardening because of it, let alone transplant any house plants.

Interesting, Mick Mick. I didn’t find anything in searches about saladphobia other than a few minor mentions in blogs about their own personal fear.

Most certainly for the most part, we all have fears to some degree of something, Shaun. But it’s a matter of how disabling the fear is, and how much it affects the individual’s quality of life. The best thing to do is seek help to overcome them if they’re crippling.

Hehe, some funny pieces in that video, Cakebite ;-) Unfortunately, I can’t post it here since some of the vocabulary isn’t SFW. But I hope to update this post soon to add to it from what’s been written in comments.

Kameron, your fear of clowns is called Coulrophobia. My guess is you had a traumatic emotional experience or witnessed something horrifying to you on TV of a clown as a child. Isn’t there a horror movie about one? I never watch those ;-)

  26. Fear of the Burger King… I will never sleep with the window open ever again.

  27. gr8 list!
I found meself within this phobias :

1.Work — Ergophobia or Ponophobia that’s why I had to resigned from my old job and open my own bussines

    2. Duty or responsibility, neglecting — Paralipophobia awfull stuff

    3. Thinking — Phronemophobia and this one is the worst I have, driving me insane, especially when I was in college. Its hard for me to explain that fealing.

  28. how about herpetophobia? my greatest phobia of all, great list btw. i can also relate to philophobia, hehehe

  29. Thank for listing all this “phobias”. My greatest phobia is to see insane/crazy people… how do you call that?

  30. I have only one major fear. It’s the fear of lying, mean-spirited, vindictive, power-hungry politicians. The kind that will say or do anything to gain power and wealth. I think it’s called Clintonphobia.

  31. DB, at least you’ve found a way to deal with your work related phobias by becoming self-employed. Perhaps your fear of thinking is related to a work environment as well.

Christiana, herpetophobia — fear of reptiles or creepy, crawly things — I’m sure there are many people with the same fears. And thanks :-)

Martin, the only thing I could find closely related was Lyssophobia, dealing with insanity.

    Hahaha, good one, Nitropuppy :-)

  32. @ Eve Isk

my partner has a fear of rope … perhaps that has something to do with me.

What about the fear of alcohol. Many don’t trust it and have been fed since birth how bad it is and how “insane” it makes you.

  33. Smeigal, I don’t dare ask about the rope thing ;-) but fear of alcohol is Methyphobia or Potophobia.

  34. There is actually a fear of having Bowel Movements??

    Defecaloesiophobia = Holy Crap!

  35. Seems a bit unfair to give the fear of names a name, how do you break it to the sufferer?
“There’s a name for your condition, wait, come back!”

  36. Good one, Jeff ;-)

“There’s a name for your condition, wait, come back!” Haha, too funny, Stumble. Thanks for giving me a good laugh for the day :D

Just as a sidenote, as funny as some odd phobias may seem to us on the outside, these fears can be very real for the ones who suffer. I don’t mean any disrespect to anyone.

  37. [...] All I can say is wow!  Some of these phobias are crazy.  Check them out by clicking here. [...]

  38. [...] These are some of the most original I found on life in the fast lane: [...]

  39. I HAVE A QUESTION

IS THERE A NAME FOR THE FEAR OF GIVNG MONEY AWAY AND WHAT IS IT CALLED

  40. i have a question

is there a name for fear of giving

  41. Tony, the only thing I’m able to find is Chrometophobia and Chrematophobia which are phobias related to the extreme fear of money.

As mentioned above, it’s the fear of money or touching money. Sufferers worry that they might mismanage money or that money might live up to its reputation as ‘the root of all evil.’

I was unable to find anything related to giving it. Although many have a difficult time with that to begin with ;-)

  42. A new documentary type show for a major cable network that emphasized Entertainment, the Arts and Education is looking for people in S. California with OCD, anxiety, hoarding or extreme fears. We are doing a show in conjuncture with a well-established, world-famous OCD Center here in Los Angeles.

By offering these people free cognitive behavioral therapy (for 12 weeks and then follow up treatment) we hope to help them, and hopefully help others that will be watching our show.

Please have contact us at therapycasting@tijuanaent.com.

  43. Interesting, Janey. I hope that you’re able to help these individuals with your program.

  44. i have a very very irrational fear of My blobby.. it was triggered from watching it when i was younger. i didn’t help that my older sister loved him and we had to go to blobby land every year for her birthday. in total i have seen him over 24x in the flesh. and every time i have sketched out. even thinking about him is making my palms sweat. what do i do ? x

  45. Does anyone else get this? x

  46. Steph, it would seem to me that something happened during one of your first experiences of seeing the show when you were young. Not being an expert in the field myself, all that I can do is offer you some help in a search for sites that might offer some advice. Don’t waste your time with the first one in this link, I checked it out and it didn’t appear to take phobias seriously:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1B3GGGL_enCA244CA252&q=how+to+get+over+phobias&btnG=Search

  47. hahaha=)=)are the soo many fobs?…lol=)

  48. I have a great fear of flour. I can cry if I see anyone touching it och if I have to touch it myself.
I also have a fear och touching cotton balls.

I think it’s because both flour and cotton balls are so dry, and when touching it just gives me the creeps.
Maybe you have a name for it?

  49. Yes, the lists for phobias is seemingly endless.

Emma, the best I could do was find a name for fear of touching cotton which is Bambakophobia, but apparently it’s not an uncommon phobia to have of cotton balls. Considering that, I’m surprised that there isn’t a specific name for it.

As for your fear of touching flour, that is also not so unheard of, but I was unable to find a name for it anywhere.

There is a name for the fear of dryness, which is Xerophobia.

  50. Interesting reading about this phobias.

Those my one have a name?
    I have a fear of rash/pimples/boils.

If i see people who has a lot of these or something like it, or maybe psoriasis, i want to scratch my eyes out so bad!

i HATE this awful things, yuck!

  51. The closest thing that I could find for you Martina was the phobia of Skin Disease, which is called Dermatosiophobia.

  52. The past month or so, Ive started developing a fear that people can read my mind//thoughts. And I always stop myself from thinking when im around alot of people, because i dont want them to judge me. But its just a recent thing… I hope it goes away.

  53. Oh… and I have a friend who is EXTREMELY afraid of bellybuttons. If you talk about them she freaks, but if you touch her bellybutton or your own she goes crazy.

  54. Lexi, I did a number of searches, and although it seems to be somewhat of a common question, I came up empty-handed with anything revealing any validity to even the slightest possibility of reading a person’s mind.

There are some scientific studies that have been done with MRI’s, but nothing concrete came of them. But I did find this article from last February about German, British and Japanese scientists who claimed to “read minds” using sophisticated functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) and computer programs. You can read about it here:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6346069.stm

In answer for the fear of belly buttons, it’s called omphalophobia, and based on my searches, although it’s supposedly rare, it’s more common than I had thought.

  55. hi there does anyone have a name for a phobia of people snapping. for instance i cannot stand near anyone using a chainsaw etc because im terrified they will lose the plot and put it into me. i also cannot stand near anyone up high, holing a knife or anything like that

  56. Perhaps the fear you have is to anything sharp, Melissa? The fear of razors is Xyrophobia, not exactly the same thing, but the fear of sharp objects is Belonephobia. The fear of knives is Aichmophobia.

  57. Interesting. I feel lucky now, I don`t have anything listed here. But who knows? As I can see this things can occur in time from some traumas, so never say never, right? But still we should all try to prevent these things.

  58. Unfortunately, it’s typically out of our control as to what scares us to the point of bringing on anxiety. But if a person is serious enough to seek help to combat it, quite often they can be overcome.

  59. My Fear Aint Even Here.. My fear’s the fear of old men. If one looks at me I actually have to say to my self don’t throw up don’t have a panic attack and cross the street. I won’t walk in ‘granny’ areas’ and on holiday I cover up. Beat Tthat for the EXTREME

  62. I have a terrible fear of achilles tendons, i can not touch or be touched there, i can’t even look at them, as a matter of fact my heart is racing just talking about it right now. I get severe anxiety attacks if anything accidently does touch mine, i have litteraly had to pull over on the side of the road because something hit mine while driving and as weird as it sounds i can’t move for a few minutes after something like this happens. It’s really horrible, most people don’t understand, and to be honest i don’t really either i have no idea why i am like this and i absolutely hate it but i can not stop it. I have such a hard time finding shoes and you wouldn’t think it but it prevents me from doing a lot of little things, for example using a foot masager for the fear that it may come close to touching it. If any one has any ideas what i can do to get rid of this id greatly appreciate it

  63. Tess, I haven’t been able to come up with anything in regards to Achilles tendons, let alone tendons period. While it may not be common enough to have been named to find references for it, that does not mean it does not exist. The fact that you’re not even able to discuss it without feeling anxiety is a severe phobia for you.

But putting a name to it is not part of the remedy to give you any real closure or cure. Have you ever been injured there as a child? Or witnessed someone else who had been that was traumatizing to you? Any possibilities of a vehicle accident?

But that also does not mean that you cannot be cured. There are doctors who specialize in treating people with phobias. Perhaps yours is strong enough that you might want to seek assistance from a specialist in your area.

  65. “I knew a woman that had a fear of plant roots in particular, but not of the plants themselves. She couldn’t do any gardening because of it, let alone transplant any house plants.”

I have a fear of plant roots, particularly of root balls. I think it comes from the childhood myth that if you swallow an apple pip a tree will grow in your stomach. I spent a lot of time thinking about that as a child and I can still vividly remember some terrifying nightmares about roots growing inside me.

I thought I was over my phobia, but yesterday I had to re-pot some house plants and it brought the whole thing back again.

  66. Dee, the only thing that I can find that even closely matches your phobia of plant roots is Botanophobia which is the fear of plants.

I used to know someone that had a phobia of plant roots myself. She couldn’t transplant her potted plants, let alone do any gardening if it involved digging beneath the soil.

I am no expert by any means, but everything I’ve ever read state that most phobias come from something during our childhood that scared us.

  67. My boyfriend has a fear or stockings. Especially the skin tone colors. He can’t stand the feel of them, the look of them everything. So I wear them even more now hehe. What’s this fear called? I’ve searched through heaps of sites but haven’t found anything.

  68. Stockinged Feet, I haven’t been able to find anything for pantyhose or stockings. The closest thing that I came to was Textophobia, which is the fear of certain fabrics.

It would seem to me that it’s the texture that affects him the most? And being skin-toned may perhaps make them seem more life-like, in a humanizing sense of the body’s skin?

I believe with most lesser-known and obscure phobias, you need to delve into the psych of the individual to gain a better grasp of how and why it actually affects them.

  77. I found this post because two people on my homeschool message board mentioned belly button related fears in a thread about irrational fears. I couldn’t believe it! I thought I was the only whacko! My brother has the same fear, but it is much less for him. I’m not afraid of belly buttons, but I can’t stand even the thought of someone touching mine and if they do I completely freak out. I also can’t stand to see someone do something to their own belly button. My kids think it’s funny to twist theirs with the eraser end of a pencil or stick clothespins on them just to see me squirm and scream. My 16yo wanted to get her belly button pierced for her birthday, and this was my #1 argument against it. I’ve seen belly rings that even look kinda cute, but the thought of doing it and having something there all the time really bothers me. What do you suppose causes this? I’m sure I never had any “belly button trauma”. I do have some personal space issues, especially with people I don’t know well, but I can control those feelings and impulses. Once a woman patted my belly in the checkout line of a grocery store when I was about 7 months pregnant. That bothered me quite a lot, but she was far enough from my belly button that she didn’t get punched in the eye. I just smiled sweetly and stepped back while answering her question of how far along I was. Okay, off to google “omphalophobia”.

  78. I have this phobia about groups of things. Freaky stuff like a bunch of eyeballs, things sticking up in the ground in a group, I am getting chills thinking about this!

    such a fear…and it has a name.

of virgins or young girls. But I don’t think
    that is the same thing.

  86. I have a fear too Allodoxaphobia i’m afraid of peoples opinions >.>

  87. These fears may look interesting and amusing on the face of it, but I’m sure the people with them suffer badly.

    Josie (not real name)
    North Wales, England

  99. I felt some terror!

  100. Josie, I’m not an expert by any stretch of the word when it comes to phobias, I’m simply adept at searching to find the information out ;-)

Sadly, this did not help me to put a name to your phobia for octopi or cephlapods. Nonetheless, that doesn’t nullify or lesson its validity by any means. I think many of us just want to be able to put a name to that which we fear. It’s a phobia no matter if it’s been labeled or not, so it’s important to realize that’s not what you need to accept. It just ‘is.’

I’m assuming that it isn’t something that would affect your daily routine unless you’re a marine biologist or work in that realm. So fortunately your phobia is not one that’s crippling for you on a regular basis.

What I’ve read time and again that the main manner to treat one’s phobia is by gradually subjecting yourself to images of what one fears or the experience of what one fears, even if it’s for a few seconds. Have someone you trust accompany you for support. Repeating it a second time becomes slightly easier, as you know that you survived it the first time. And you continue from there.

But as I stated, I am not an expert or a psychologist, so my advice is not a professional one.

The closest terms that I found which aren’t close to yours are:

    Ocean or sea- Thalassophobia
    Creepy, crawly things- Herpetophobia.

I hope this helps you in some way.

  101. Nidhi, I did find the term for your phobia of loud noises – it’s called Ligyrophobia. See my above comment for the rest.

  102. i’m afraid of the name for the phobia of words

  105. Hmm …

    Great post

    I have bookmarked it !

  106. I have a zoophobia!! I always fear animals no matter what size they are! I can’t kill flies, and my friend once was holding the tiniest turtles ever and I tried..I tried to hold them but I couldn’t!! I threw it to her and felt like crying! ouch!

  107. I have tryphobia, the fear of holes

  108. …this website is great..
    now i know my phobia..
it’s zoophobia or the fear of touching the animals..

  109. I have fears, but im not quiet sure if they’re phobias. I know for sure that I might have a phobia of people walking with me on the side walk or anywhere(like a stranger). I guess it’s because when I was younger some stranger kept talking to me and wouldnt leave me alone. Now I dont trust any guy on the street.

  110. I have an extreme phobia of yo yo’s and paddle balls, even when they are in a package. I get light headed even thinking about them. Has anyone ever heard of this, it really bothers me.

  111. Well my phobias are kinda linked . . . if so scared of the toilet!! I’ts cos of the hole at the bottom, i just freak cos i dont know where it goes, i do go to the toilet, but im like . . . quickkkk must get off!!!! and do it as quickly as i possible can, i think it’s linked to my fear of drains and deep water, or being in water where you cant see it or you cant see whats in it, i cant swim in the sea unless we go somewhere completely clear with no sea weed or crabs, and i try not to let fish bother me.

Now drains in pools are just the WORST. i cant touch them at all, i even have trouble touching the tiles in a pool. yeesh =S

  112. i have the penis phobia
    IM NOT KIDDING i told
my friends and they laugh when a guy walks past me
thats why i go to a all girls school
there are guy teachers but i try to avoid them
our principal is a guy and
i get called to his office every week
    because i do bad things……
    and i have many more
phobias.. one of them is the ugly
phobia its really hard for me
    because at my school
all of them are so uglyy i start to

a phobia of ladybugs (or ladybirds)
If i see one i want to kill it (i know
really mean… sorry) but i cant get
    close enough.
i also have an EXTREME fear of clowns

  119. its not a phobia but i do dislike ventriloquists’ dummies, mannequins, and clowns. i would certainly never want one in my house.

  120. I don’t know if this is a phobia but I recently woke up from a dream I’ve had re-occuring in similar ways. It starts off as me looking into the mirror to see boils on my forehead, removing the boils leaves a hole in my head. In my dream I don’t see my skull or my brain for that matter, just darkness. One of my dreams included a boil on my forehead that turned into an eye. It sounds crazy and my mother even laughed but it terrifies me, I feel disgusted even writing about it. I need to know if this is a phobia and if it has a particular name or just a irrational expirience.

Plus, I seem to have noticed I feel disgusted reading/hearing the word boil and anything to do with it e.g Skin boils, boiling water ect.
    My skin just crawls.

  121. i am terrified of ladybugs if i see on i go screaming in the other direction or i have to kill it with the closest thing me and my friend were in the bathroom and i killed one with hairspray yea i know kinda cruel but again i am terrified and i am also terrified of moths and if you could give me two seperate names for this that would be great because im not scared of all insects

  122. ahahah
    these are really funny. :)

  123. Crawing insects do me in. I can look at them, I can push them around with a stick, but I cannot touch them in anyway, shape, or form with my barehands. Flying ones like butterflys and lightning bugs don’t bother me though, it is only things like roaches, ants, spiders, even walking sticks that unsettle me.

  124. UUrgh…i have a phobia of like wierd textures and patterns and like holes all clustered together..i even hate the word cluster… and stencils…small pox…AND THE WORST ONES…Phobia of IRON FILLING’S…URGH when they all move with the magnet it makes my skin crawl and it gives me Goose Bumps…Urgh especially when i had to do it in science…i cried and screamed…it was disguting..
Does any body know the name for this or…more importantly does anybody HAVE this same phobia..!!!!

  129. One of our lodgers was really scared of cats due to some childhood experience, she couldn’t bear to have either of our (really quite friendly) moggies near her. My friend has a phobia of thunderstorms (she also had a trepidation of the M1 after being involved in an accident but has confronted and beaten that one) and there was a girl at school who had a fear of black leather gloves.

Angela, I wouldn’t go up Blackpool Tower if I were you! About two-thirds of the way up you have to go round a corner with a glass floor where you can see everything on the ground a couple of hundred feet below you.

The shower one could be from hearing about concentration camps or seeing Psycho.

  130. i have a phobia of butterflies

but only because something happened in my past life and since then ive had it.

whats a phobia of butterflies called?

  131. i have a fear of chewing gum

  132. These are so bizarre! I think I am developing fears slowly hehe. I dont lyk metal door handles as I hate electric shocks they r horrible! I avoid ne thing that luks metal! 135. Hey. I have to say that for the most part, I have very few fears. But I do have a great fear of heights. It makes it interesting in my job. I am in the tree removal business. I am in a bucket truck or climbing trees every day. I get to a point that I start to freak out, cant look down and get nauseus. I have to stop and take a few deep breaths with my eyes closed and relax for a few minutes. I can continue with my job from there. It has never gotten any better or worse, it just is. I have co-workers with absolutely no fear at all, and a couple who wont go as high as to stand on a stump. I can understand how people can be completely debilitated by their fears. I think the best thing they can do is to face them with some one that they trust beside them, a little at a time. It may not get better, but it may get easier.

  136. i have lots of phobias but i’m going to name eight.

  158. i have a fear of my wet hair when it touches my dry body i cant stand it, it brings me to tears if i dont lift it off

  159. I married an intimacy phobic. It didn’t manafest itself until the “bloom was off the rose” a bit. A favorite expression of family members is “it’s not my business to get involved”. The fear of intimacy is covered up in all manner of creative ways. My ex (yes) wife would say something mean if things got too intimate. Father-in-law would walk away in the middle of a conversation if it got too interesting. It took me a while to figure out that there is a phobia at work there.

Here’s my phobia: I fear that my child will “catch” this turn of mind. I would move heaven and earth if I could protect her from it since the ability to give and take intimacy is fundamental to happiness.

  160. this is gooooood!!!

  161. I have a really bad phobia of spiders, can’t stand them! if i see one i end up going all still or if its near me i scream and run out crying usually unless i can get someone to get it for me !

my friend has just told me though that if u kill a spider, other spiders come looking coz they can smell some sort of substance thats been left by the other spider! ? is this true???

  166. Woa…I thought I was the only person in the world that was freaked out by styrofoam! The sound it makes when you scratch it or rub it against another piece of styrofoam…ugh…but it’s not like…I see it and faint…it’s not like that…I guess it’s just that I know it’s potential haha, so I try to stay away from it. But yah, the noise freaks me out. I am also afraid of loud noises…and heights…but other than that I’m a regular guy haha!

  167. I don’t even think it’s a phobia and I don’t know anyone else who goes through this…But I can not stand to see a neat injury. For example, i can look at an open wound ragged with blood gushing out but if it’s a straight line opening…I get crazy…i get mad..i start sweating and sometimes i even cry…

It’s just something about being in the water with the unknown, i think i would have a panic attack if i ever saw a shark and i would probably faint and hyperventalate. i also dont like really deep water with creatures in there and i dnt no what is underneath me :S i shiver just thinking about it

  174. I have a phobia of things in costumes, like the ones you will see walking around at Disney Land. I’ve had it ever since i was a little girl. Everybody i tell seems to find it hilarious. I can’t seem to find the name for it anywhere, i really want to know what it is

Would be nice if someone knew where to get help with this.
It’s a real pain as i have to fly with airplanes at least 2 times a year.

  176. I just wanna add that if there’s anyone else here that has Demonophobia. Music has helped me a lot.
