A rocket launched into space on April 28th from Spaceport America in southern New Mexico for a 4 minute orbit, carrying the partial ashes Gordon Cooper and James Doohan, John Meredith Lucas, a writer for the original “Star Trek” series, along with 200 others.

The sealed metal capsules were designed to withstand the rigors of space flight.

CNN reports the cylinders landed in the San Andres Mountains on White Sands Missile Range, proving difficult tertian for access. Uncooperative weather was also a deterrent to locating the cylinders sooner. They were found by a UP Aerospace crew with help from White Sands.

In a telephone interview, Wende Doohan, James Doohan’s widow, said “He probably wished he could have stayed in space.”

The cylinders will be mounted on plaques referencing the space flight, and will be given to the families who provided the ashes.

  1. Talk about anti-climatic! Do you suppose the patrons of the service were refunded their money?

  2. Mark, there certainly was a lot of hype about this over the past couple of weeks, just to find out that they (supposedly) knew where it was all along.

To think that they were refunded their money, haha, I highly doubt it. Technically, they did orbit, and the ashes were found. They were given plaques to commemorate the event, so I’d lay money on it that they felt they held up to their end of the deal.
