BigfootClaims by terrified villagers that ‘bigfoot’-type hairy beasts are roaming the jungles in the Garo hills area of Meghalaya state, close to the borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan, have prompted authorities to order an investigation. “A team of wildlife officials and other experts will conduct a study to find out if there is any truth in the locals’ claims about these hairy giants.” said Samphat Kumar, a district magistrate in the West Garo Hills district.

The creatures have been spoken of and occasionally spotted for years, but sightings have increased in the past month, prompting authorities to look into the matter, reports Yahoo News — AFP.

Local farmer Wallen Sangma said he had seen an entire family of the creatures — possibly a lowland relative of the Himalayan Yeti, or a cousin of the North American Bigfoot and Sasquatch, or Australia’s Yowie.

“The sight was frightening — two adults and two smaller ones, huge and bulky, furry.” he told an AFP reporter who visited the remote area on Thursday and Friday.

“Their heads looked as if they were wearing caps, and their color was blackish-brown.” he said, adding the four ‘monsters’ were about 100 to 130 feet (30 to 40 meters) away from him as he looked for firewood in a forested area, and vanished into the undergrowth.

Claims to have sighted such bigfoot creatures are treated skeptically by scientists because of lack of solid physical proof, but there are scientists and researchers who believe they could exist.

One Garo Hills group, the Achik Tourism society, has been trying to verify the creature’s existence for the past 10 years, photographing footprints reportedly 13 to 15 inches (33 to 38 centimeters) long, and ‘nests’ reported by locals.

They claim to have hair samples of the creature taken from the forest which will be sent for DNA testing.

  1. hahaha.. where did you get that picture from Deb?? :) I wrote about it this morning too :) great minds ?!?! lol

  2. Pearl, that’s too funny! 2 people in the same playground blog about the same topic from 2 different sources, with 2 different perspectives :-)

Here’s a link to Pearl’s post if anyone would like to read it: http://fresh-perspectives.blogspot.com/2007/06/giant-footprints-prove-bigfoots.html

I just searched the net til I found a pic that I liked for the story, it wasn’t part of the article I found.

  3. and here I was thinking these were the real ones Deborah….and thanking my lucky stars that we don’t have them over here..!!!!

  4. Oh but they supposedly are real Kim. At least that’s what their locals have been reporting. That’s what prompted the official probe.

It’s only the pic that’s fictitious. I’m a visual person…I’d feel naked without at least one pic on a post :-)

  5. Hey Kim – yes they are supposedly real!! look at one of the comments on my post that day – the lady from Malaysia said they heard something like that too :)

and Deb – I do agree with you a 110% .. I felt odd posting that news clip without a picture but didn’t have any time to do the search but you made my day with this post anyways.. he is kinda cute LOL

  6. Thanks Pearl, there sure wasn’t very much to choose from with any kind of quality. The rarer the topic, the harder it is to find anything worth publishing.

It’s not like anyone would have an actual pic of a bigfoot either, which really limits any kind of decent choice.

  7. Deborah, I enjoy your offbeat news! I am both entertained and enlightened when I read your blog. I’ll be on the look out for susquatch here in the Carolinas too.

  8. Thanks Matt! Always a pleasure to see your face around here :-)

If you see one in the Carolinas, give me a shout, I’ll be there with bells on and camera in hand! Knowing you, you’d be able to charm him to keep him there long enough for me to get there, haha.

    Good to see you!

  10. If anything like this ever existed it must have been traced by now.

  11. Well that’s just the thing Rajasthani, there have been so many reportings for these sightings that they’ve decided to do further studies.

Who’s to say what it really is, it may not even resemble the fabled creature, but it wouldn’t surprise me that something is ‘afoot’. New life forms are contunually being discovered even today.

  12. Please post current situation of the village, any findings about the big foot ?

  13. It seems that the DNA testing is always the downfall to these sightings. They have all these foot castings etc you’d think that at some point they’d have some concrete DNA identification.

If you have a bigfoot sighting or monster sightings please report it here: Report a Monster Sighting
