Welcome back!

Haven’t had enough insanity or dung stories yet? Want to test your ‘fear factor’? Let me complete your day.

Caffeine junkies in Australia can now drink the Grange Hermitage of coffee, the cat’s meow of their favorite bean — cat’s poo coffee. Called Kopi Luwak, it’s an Indonesian coffee made from the feces of a Luwak — a small cat-like creature native to the Australia’s coffee-growing regions.

LuwakThe Luwaks select the freshest coffee cherries to eat and once the bean passes through their digestive system it remains intact but is no longer bitter. Experts say this creates a sweeter-tasting coffee, reports NineMSN.

Bean pickers collect the animals’ feces along with the coffee beans, and then separate it from the actual coffee before being washed and brewed.

The heat of the initial brewing process eliminates any disease, fungus or parasite.Kopi_Luwak_Feces

It’s the most expensive cuppa java on the planet and locals in Townsville are crazed for it. Kopi Luwak sells for around $1400 a kilogram ($635 a pound), making it the highest price coffee in the world according to Forbes magazine’s Cup of Excellence awards.

Consuming the coffee from a cafe can pick your pocket for a lot more than your average Kopi_Luwak_Packageespresso. But the regulars at Townsville’s Hervey’s Range Heritage Tea Room have been happily paying $50 a cup for Kopi Luwak.

“[Demand for the coffee has] just gone mental.” says the cafe’s Donna Scott. “People really want to try it for the experience.”

The store’s clients are happy to pay for this unique coffee experience and can have their Kopi Luwak made to whichever form of espresso coffee they ask for, Scott said.

Experts disagree. Drinking Kopi Luwak as espresso coffee can ruin much of its unique flavor.

“It’d be wasted in espresso.” said Rob Forsyth, chairman of the Australasian Specialty Coffee Association. “You’d have to make in a plunger cup as the milk would destroy the flavor.” Photo top Kafkaesque, center Memaporg, bottom Teaandcake

Forsyth has been selling Kopi Luwak in his Sydney café for the past two years. Individual cups retail at $4 and packs of the coffee for $140 per 100 grams (3.5 ounces).

It’s a drink with a limited audience in Australia given its origin and price, Forsyth said.

“You only get coffee geeks who really want it.” he said. “Yes, it’s unusual, but nothing would justify that sort of money.”

  2. Yo, Kim!

The more I discover odd stories, the more I discover weirdness going on your neck of the woods, hehehe.

  3. I actually saw this kind of coffee on an Australian TV show all about customs. Some guy tried to bring this into the country through the airport and got busted for having it as they weren’t sure what it was. Eventually once they’d checked it out fully it was allowed through. I’m sure people all across Sydney are sipping it now … nice!

  4. HHHMMM…I think somehow I will probably pass on trying this….can you imagine the poor old ladies trying to dunk their biscuits in it lol. Yet I suppose it’s just the thing to wash down chargrilled dog.
Let us know if you try it Deborah hahaha

  5. I’m sure that made for an interesting story for the airport official to take home Geedos, haha! It would never pass here in Canada … no foods are permitted to cross borders for regular travelers. You can’t post or receive them through the mail either.

Dunkin donuts Colin? Not my cup of tea (or java), I’ll pass too thanks :-)

  6. he he Deborah…..well I have to say I heard it here first !!!!….how come I’m missing out on all these “treats” ?????….think I’ll give this coffee a miss if it comes to our neck of the woods eh !!!!!!

  7. It amazes me with the things I find in Australia! Your country certainly has some of the most interesting animals I’ve ever seen :-)

  12. Is this the same as weasel coffee? It’s very big in Vietnam too – tho I expect cheaper than Oz!

  13. I’ve never heard of weasel coffee, Jonny. It’s definitely not the same thing. I’ll do a search on it, unless you’re just toying with me :-)

There’s so much oddness that goes on in the world that almost anything can be possible!

  15. oh my word!!! i don’t think i will ever drink coffee again!

  16. Weasel coffee from Vietnam is not the same as Kopi Luwak. The weasel eat the coffee cherries but instead of defecate them, like Luwak does, they regurgitate the beans.
They belong to a different mamalia families. Civet is Viverridae and Weasel is Mustelidae.
The most famous is Kopi Luwak.

  19. All scientific analysis confirm that Kopi Luwak is not dangerous for health. Dr. Marcone said that as a scientist, he doubted about the safety of a product which has been in contact with excrement but his final tests show that due to the thorough washing process the quantity of pathogen organisms in the beans is insignificant. Whatever the washing process misses the roasting and brewing process will make up for.

  22. We really enjoy what you write on here. We try and visit your site every day so keep up the good articles!

  23. I am usually not one to submit comments on people’s blogs, but for this article I simply had to do it. I’ve been digging through your website a lot nowadays and I am really impressed, I think you could really emerge as the main voices for your niche. Not sure what your schedule is like in life, but if you started commiting more time to writing here, I would guess you would start getting a lot of traffic eventually. With advertisements, it could emerge as a sweet passive income source. Just something to ponder. Good luck!

  24. Bradford and Leida, thank you for your comments and kind words, as well as your visits :-)

I had a boo at your website, it made me hungry, hahaha. I see that you’re based in the States somewhere, unfortunate for me, as I could have been a good customer ;-) We’re located in Canada. Pies are one of the few desserts I really enjoy. Especially home made!

Back when I was publishing almost daily, we were quite a popular site due the the nature of the unusual topics I enjoy writing about. In fact, it rather surprises me how much traffic we still receive, considering there hadn’t been any fresh content for so long.

I am back to writing sporadically here and there, but won’t be able to do as I had in the past. I made a promise to my husband when I had taken a hiatus from it that it wouldn’t consume my life as it had back then. If I fall back on my word, I may be looking at divorce papers instead of writing papers, hahaha.

I do however have intentions to hire writers so that it’s not all-consuming, and bring in some advertisers to help cover my costs and attempt to make some sort of meager income from it.

My husband and I are self-employed, so there are a lot of demands on time otherwise, and we have a pair of puppies who deserve attention as well. So it’s a bit of a juggling act to serve all masters at one time ;-)

It’s rare for me to comment on my private life such as this, but you asked, so … ;-)

Thanks again, and all the best with your busy little business!

  25. I wouldn’t try it even you pay me $50. People just trying to make a statment or showing off by fooling themself.
