Welcome back!

The first annual Dads with Prostate Cancer bike rally was held this past Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta. Yours truly had the honor to be the rear pilot vehicle in addition to another of our vehicles, representing our company Fast Lane Transport Ltd.

Gord Steinke, local newscaster for Global TV had the honorary lead of the rally in procession. Numerous sponsors included Mark’s Work Wearhouse and Tim Horton’s. One noted guest speaker welcomed the participants with “more than $6 million collectively in motorcycles, $100,000 in leathers, and $17,000 in traffic violations, the latter stated with tongue in cheek.

The weekend was filled with a plethora of various charitable functions. Due to this unfortunately, although local radio news station CHED was on location, the event received very little media coverage for it afterwards, and I was unable to find reporting to fill in my blanks. Hindsight is 20/20 — had I known this I would have brought pen and paper to take notes of names of guest speakers and sponsors. If I have missed anyone, it’s purely unintentional, and I ask in advance for your grace in understanding.

Prostate cancer will affect 1 in 7 men in their lifetimes. However, there is a 95% cure rate if caught early for this little talked about form of cancer.

The event was still a great success to assist in public awareness, with total funds raised exceeding $70,000 from participants.

The all-day event’s initial check-in point began at the south east perimeter of Edmonton, venturing on towards the south west point with Edmonton city police escort, and onwards through the metropolis of Stony Plain, north to Saint Albert, east to Fort Saskatchewan and back to the first check-in point for a final barbecue roundup. I had an unusual sense of feeling like the warrior protector for our troops from behind as the barrier between them and local traffic, odd as it may sound.

I have to say, it was truly a thrilling experience with the excitement of all involved, and the police escort riding along side me and behind on motorcycles and riding vehicles. Edmonton police provided a superb coverage, barricading on-ramps to Whitemud freeway, one of the city’s major internal freeways — traffic was stopped as far as the eye could see. Trust me, it created a statement.

Photos were shot by our operations manager Wayne Dobie, while my husband rode Harley somewhere in the long stretched procession of bikes. Due to the fact that we were riding vehicles while shooting photos, picture quality isn’t the best, but it captioned the event nonetheless. What you see captured represents only a small portion of participants in attendance, from all walks of life, including numerous cancer survivors.

If you ever have the opportunity to participate in charitable events such as these, it will be a very rewarding experience for a worthy cause, which I highly recommend.

  2. I would love to do something like that for a worthy cause. My husbands father and uncle has had prostate cancer and my father has had some issues. I admire you for doing something so helpful to others. I look forward to your future posts.

  3. Hi Brenda,

Thank you … it’s very easy to get involved if you’re able to donate some of yourself for time, and very rewarding. I met some great people at the event, all there for the same cause.

I lost my mother to cancer who was bedridden in hospital for 2 years with it, as well as several friends. It’s a very ugly disease. Fortunately prostate cancer has an extremely high rate for cure, but not many donate to the cause due to little exposure for it.

There’s so many new discoveries with positive hopes for cure for many forms of cancer, and little funding to further the research. Every penny counts, and they all add up.

  4. Deborah – Great story, too bad it was so far under the radar that it received such little play in the media – I guess everyone was so concerned over Paris’s situation that the rest of the real world was passed by. Like your site very much. Will be a return visitor, though you might not be able to see me due to the new cloaking device that Duke has designed. Take care.

  6. Wow..Deborah…what a marvellous effort….looks like you had a great day and the weather was on your side too !!!.great pics !!!

  7. Thanks Kim. It was a lot of fun.

The police escort was a thrilling experience. It was only for the first leg to opposite ends of the city. The rest of the rally went through the exterior metropolis, so it was out of their jurisdiction.

From the second check point on it was basically a free for all, so it was a challenge keeping in any kind of line formation to stick behind them.

  8. Thanks Morgan,

Paris is everywhere these days, you can’t escape her. They say even bad news is good news, but I think that works for Trump a whole lot better than it will for her.

Thanks for your visit, hope to see you back.

If you stumble across a spare cloaking device, do let me in on it OK?

  9. Looks like a really nice and grand event. You were one of the organizers?

  10. Not really organizers, more supporters than anything, doing what we could to contribute to the cause with our company vehicles.

  11. That looks like so much fun. now all i need to do is get myself a full fledges motorcycle

  14. What an exciting way to raise the profile and funds for prostate cancer! When you first mentioned bikes, I imagined bicycles, then when I saw the motorbikes it just suddenly revved it all up and seemed all the more powwerful and very masculine and strong. Go for it!

  15. Hi Deborah, I just happen to come across this post of yours. And I wonder if they do this event yearly, it’s a good event to endorse and promote to spread awareness to younger generations in preventing prostate cancer. I would be happy to promote it myself on one of my blogs if I get to know more information about it. Thanks

  16. Hi Jason,

Yes, this is an annual event. If memory serves me, I believe it’s held in June.

Here is the link to the website, which states that the 2010 rally was on June 12th, so if you wish to promote the event, keep tabs on it around that time next year:

  17. Nice to see people are trying to create awareness for prostate cancer. I hope that aside from awareness, they are also informing the public of the option available such as those medical treatments and alternative cancer treatments

  18. Thank you for the information Deborah, will definitely draft a timeless post regarding it, so I wouldn’t forget about it.

    Regards,
    Jason
