Since anti-gang laws were enforced in Honduras and El Salvador and series of killings in Guatemala were committed by citizen vigilante groups and security forces, gangs are ditching tattoos to duck the radar and have resorted to more subtle, low profile ways of identifying themselves as members of criminal organizations, and performing extreme makeovers. Today, gang members with tattooed faces are either dead, in prison or in hiding.

Throughout Central America and the U.S., the Mara 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs are known for their audacious tactics, including beheading their enemies and covering entire buildings and even their bodies with gang symbols.
Anti-gang operatives are saying these typically uneducated and aimless youth have begun recruiting high school and college students, and escalating their criminal activities from minor robberies to large-scale extortion, prostitution, car theft and kidnappings.
The gangs first formed in Los Angeles in the 1980′s, recruiting Salvadorans who fled to the U.S. to escape civil war. After many of the members were deported for crimes committed in the U.S. in the ’90′s, the gangs established themselves in Central America.
There are believed to be as many as 30,000 Maras in the U.S., mainly in Los Angeles, and about 100,000 in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, according to U.S. federal authorities.
Distinguishing themselves by tattoos head to toe with threatening symbols and hanging out in large crowds on street corners, their goal was to intimidate and terrify regular citizens and rival gangs alike.
But that has recently changed after El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras adopted tough anti-gang policies, including graffiti-removal campaigns and harsh punishments for gang-related crimes. Many youths have been arrested or killed, allegedly in operations by police or citizen’s groups.
“These days we can’t even go out onto the street, where the police look at us and we end up dead.” said 25 year old Giovanni Estrada — aka ‘Little Crazy’ — an imprisoned gang member with a tattooed face. “That’s why we tell (new gang members) not to paint their faces.”

Sammy Rivera, a security adviser for the Narcotics Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, and Jose Luis Tovar, deputy police chief in El Salvador, both say the gangs’ increasingly lucrative pursuits have attracted high school and college students looking to make a buck, versus the dropouts and other gang members who mainly sought to satisfy their need to belong.
“Before they would rob a bus and could take away some cell phones and a little money.” Rivera said. “Now they have a steady income from the extortion they carry out in their territories.”

Woman Gives Up Everything for Gang
Apparently seduced by lifestyle and money, Ingrid Vicente abandoned her husband, kids, government job and law studies to join a gang in 2002. As a secretary at the Finance Ministry, she earned 2,000 quetzales a month and doubled that in 1 day as a gang member.
Ingrid didn’t look like a typical Mara, so she was able to easily smuggled guns from El Salvador, earning about $650 a day. She also helped uneducated gang members figure out how much they could extort from storekeepers without bankrupting them.
“These guys don’t know what is possible.” Ingrid told The Associated Press. “They didn’t even know how to drive a car or a motorcycle, so I showed them how to drive.”
After discovering the cost and bearing 2 more children with a gang member, she decided to quit. Her gang killed her brother and boyfriend in retaliation. She’s now a witness, testifying against the gang.
Gangs have been forced to recruit people like Ingrid to keep a step ahead of the government’s zero-tolerance policies, which have forced them underground and into new areas of crime.
No longer able to conduct blatant robberies, the gangs have turned to “other activities that require a better level of organization.” said Rivera.
Even though the graffiti is gone and the walls are blank, “We still hear gunshots every day.” said Guatemala City resident Aura Escobar.

Tattoo Removal to Help Begin New Life
Gang members hoping to build a new life often look to erase the memories of their criminal lifestyle by removing their tattoos, and advocates of tattoo removal say that eradicating the gang tattoos helps them to do so.
But the well has dried up for many tattoo removal programs that were once providing grants and hospital funds and donated time from medical staff has been dying out.
Dr. Paul Zwiebel, the physician in charge of the Swedish program Swedish Medical Center established in 1993 in Colorado said, “At first, we treated hundreds of kids. Swedish was a very willing partner. Without them the program could not have happened.”
The procedure costs between $2,000 to $5,000 per tattoo, according to Zwiebel, and sometimes more for larger tattoos.
The program provided free treatments if the patient provided 25 hours of community service, made written promise to make a lifetime commitment to leave the gang lifestyle and describe how tattoos were holding them back from achieving their goals.

Dr. Zwiebel says the procedure involves treating the tattoo with a laser that breaks down the ink in the skin. The body then removes the ink through the immune system. It generally takes several sessions to treat a small tattoo, and more sessions for larger tattoos. The procedure can be painful and may result in some scarring.
Julie Lonborg, director of planning, business development and marketing at Swedish notes that while the program was popular in its inception, it became plagued with no-shows for the costly and time-intensive procedure.
“There was a lack of interest from the community.” Lonborg said. “There were more no-shows than appointments. It became a waste of time.”
Rev. Leon Kelly, the director of Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives in Denver said, “We were trying to give an alternative to folks who wanted to change their life, but a lot of our people weren’t willing to follow through. The funding went away.”
Terrance Roberts, a former Bloods gang member and director of The Prodigal Son Initiative in Aurora still has his gang tattoos. “I looked into (tattoo removal) for myself, but it was a lot of running around.” he said. “It (tattoo removal) can be a diversion from other, more successful programs.”
Gang tattoos often are used to tell the world the bearer is proud of his affiliation and his neighborhood. But the permanent etchings are much easier applied than removed. One can cover them up with another tattoo or have them removed by laser — a painful, expensive process that’s frequently beyond the financial reach of most former gang members.
But when former gang members attempt to put their lives back together, find jobs and detach themselves from the stigma of gang life, they soon learn that removing the tattoos is very costly. Some tattoo removal businesses charges as much as $8,000 to remove a single tattoo.
Most tattoo parlors steer clear of doing gang-related tattoos for fear of being found out where the work was done by rival gang members, presenting a serious threat to their business, said San Diego tattoo artist Gordo Lost. Most gang tattoos are done by someone in the gang member’s neighborhood, or in jail, he added.

Job-stoppers
Once gang members are out of prison or decide to go straight, the past can haunt those who bear ink on their skin, especially if the tattoo is somewhere visible even when fully clothed.
Tattoos on the forearms, hands or face are called ‘job-stoppers’ said Lost. While covering up gang-related tattoos is an option, even tattoos that have nothing to do with gangs can make it difficult to find work he said, adding that he often advises new clients not to get tattooed on parts of their body that are visible to potential employers.
Released from prison after serving 19 months for auto theft, Rivera — a former Mesa Locos gang member — said he is doing his best to leave gang life behind. Rivera has more than 15 tattoos altogether with Mesa tattoos on various parts of his body, including his neck and fingers.
But, “it’s hard to find a job on my own cause of my record and because of my tattoos.” Rivera said, adding that he now works part time for his girlfriend’s father.
Some of the body art he had done in jail, others he had done by friends.

Tattoo artist Obed Mejia of Escondido Body Art, said that he was a gang member in San Marcos many years ago, but left gang life behind. He said he got his first lessons in tattooing from an uncle who had just gotten out of prison and knew the techniques.
“Most neighborhoods have a homeboy who will buy a (tattoo) machine or make his own out of a guitar string, a pen and a toy motor — it’s real easy.” said Mejia.

Well based on what I’ve been finding on the net, they are very real Gary. There is information on them at Know Gangs, and Wikipedia also notes that they originated in Los Angelos.
One one thing is for certain Jeff, it marks tham as part of the gang permanently. For sure, once they’ve left the gang, they don’t have resources for income to remove the tattoos it would take for such a vast amount of inkwork. There’s also the factor of scarring to take into account. It’s one thing on the body, but another on the face.
I like tattoos but not like this. My thinking is first I have to have my personal identification then for beauty.

My sentiment is that tattoos should have some sense of personal importance, rather than simply getting artwork of a butterfly or what have you. I agree with you that facial tattoos hide the man beneath the artwork, and aren’t a thing of beauty.

There are gangs that hardcore in LA. Most of them are Mexican gangs at that. And it’s not so much that their hiding themselves with the facial tattoos. It’s more of them showing their strong and faithful to the gang their in. It shows that they are men in a sense.

While I may not know what it’s like to live that life and manage to break free from it and live to tell the tale, I do know others who’ve broken free of other forms of ‘gang life’ so to speak, and I applaud you for speaking up, breaking free of it, and helping others in that area.

The video games industry doesn’t help much though with games like grand theft auto encouraging such things. Although to be fair anyone stupid enough to be influenced into that kind of lifestyle by a video game is likely to end up doing it anyway.

@Blonde06, I think that you have a point in saying that these people should change their lives, but I do not think that you should make such extreme comments. For one, you said that they should know morals. When you grow up all your life only knowing how you should act to follow suit with a gang, then you only have the morals that they teach you. No one is born with morals, they are taught. There are certain Indian tribes that will kill innocent people if one of their members dies, whether from natural or unnatural causes. A gang is a culture, and you learn how to act from that culture.

Life is so beautiful! There is so much to see, to learn, to enjoy. It feels good to earn a living, to raise a family, to make your parents proud, to know that you are at peace with the people & with God… it’s a shame that people are willing to throw it all away and drag others into their misery.
I don’t buy the argument that there is no way out of gangs, I grew up in South Central L.A., did several years in jail, got my face tattooed, and I just plain walked away from it, I have been away from it for several years holding an honest lifestyle and I must say that I couldn’t have done it without God.
Bottom line is: you either stay in or get out; you make that choice in your life.

Its about family and unity. Most gang members don’t have a stable family and seek comfort and support from others that accept them as they are just like a family does. People need to stop judging and begin to understand the reasons why gangs develop. Violence is the response to judgment and oppression.

When innocent people are senselessly terrorized, beaten and killed at random and/or for trivial reasons (pride, initiation, dementia, etc.), then it becomes a problem that can only be dealt with one way.
I don’t care how hard some of these kids might have had or currently have it– they lack the intelligence to know any better, or to care/take accountability for their actions. They simply do not care who they injure/kill. Their definition of “survival” is so warped that it allows them to think that it is acceptable to destroy.
Plus, I think tattoos are great on any terrorist idiot, as it makes them easy targets. It up to the American public to not allow themselves to be intimidated by these criminals.

hi im from australia way down under and here we have alot off tattood men and woman,and here its a person telling a life story or just art no gangs no negative judment ,most of the time anyway, the tattoos dont represent gangs to let others no where u belong or what oganization u r in im heavly tattooed and iv raised 3 children owned 4 house and worked for 30 years ,tattoos arent to be used to scare sumbody or demand respect ITS ART and we have sum of the best tattooist in the world here ,but no gangs =no guns=not mny shootings

i’ve read a lot of people cast their judgment and i’ve found that most dont really know much into depth of what “gang life” is and why it is. i dont claim to know it all but i do know quite a bit and please let me share it with you all: first of all, historically, likewise the “Crips” gang, Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) originally got started by a couple of salvadorian kids trying to protect themselves from the racially oppressive LAPD. as time went on they were sent to prison where they met the Mexican mafia; this is when they picked up the 13 and became MS13. 13 for the 13th lettern of the alphabet: M, AKA the “Mexican Mafia”. now there are two reasons why they hooked up with the mexican mafia: the first is due to prison life and the need for unity for prison survival and control of safety; secondly, who ever rules the prisons rules the streets! so by hooking up with the mexicans they solidified their business prospects: drugs trfficing! later on, as John Adams taught us, came competition: Mara DiezOcho (M18). but one thing which must be noted is that not all 18th street gangs are the same gang. no disrepect to the gang, but the name 18th street is quite common.
well as to the subject of tattoos in gangs, tatts serve a very similar purpose in gang life as they do in other median of culture. they’re a form of lenguage and expression of pride, strength, unity, rank, identity, religion and the beauty of their lives! this is merely the same as the reasons which “Santa” claimed his tatts for, but some how he found his to be of higher value, such an ignorant and blatantly selfish falacy. if you take the time to look at each and every tattoo of theirs, you’ll find portraits of loved ones, religiously related quotes, caligraphy, and cultural schemes.
now above i read some one talk about how its absurd to think that tattooing your face will help you hide in some sort of jungle, and saw how those persons above laughed, but know this: a vast majority of these gangster are sent to central american jails where they’re looked up in huge halls where they roam mixed up with rival gangsters, so when a whole bunch of them do tattoo their faces completely and with a huge 18, on a jail rumble fight, that becomes their uniform and thats how they know whos who and whos the enemy. also its hard to truly identify a particular member when they all are relatively tatted the same.

I live in LA. Though I don’t participate in gangs, I’ve encountered many who do. From what I gather, they hold their tattoos as a badge of honor. These are Asian gangs, btw. Now, many non-gang kids are putting up tattoos as well. Though not in their faces, all over their arms and legs. Maybe there’s a future in the tattoo removal business.

The tattooing of gang member is no different from the ancient tradition of tattooing warriors. It’s a ritualistic ceremony that creates a feeling of initiation and even hierarchy in the men.
In my home town the gang members get very intricate and often beautiful work done, mostly depicting the Virgin Mary and other religious Catholic symbols. I have seen some back pieces that are no less then fine art.
The only facial tattoos I’ve ever seen though are mostly on the squatting hippies and some of the more extreme local Goths. They are usually small and ornamental, having little or no symbolism.

I agree with Borneo. I dont think the tattoos looks scary or ugly, but rather tells a story or expresses some experience. When I saw the first and second photos I think they look so sad..it even makes me sad. We cant call them stupid or crazy or locos because we cant begin to understand why they did the things they did or how or why they entered gangs. Some do it for brotherhood or survival or family…there are many reasons. I cant judge them because they are human and they have lived a different life than me. We cant understand others sometimes but I think we should be respectful and not judgemental.

I grew up in Boyle Heights and didn’t realize how traumatic it was for me to be shot at, jumped, mugged and lose multiple friends to drugs, prison and death, until I moved out of the area and had to deal with the effects. The crazy part is that I wasn’t even a gang member. I was the one who was trying to stay out of trouble! When I see the pics of the tatted faces, the only thing that comes to mind is despair. Maybe pride, maybe art, maybe survivial, but definitally despair. The members from Central America have less to lose than the ones in LA. When I ran the streets I didn’t see my friends as immoral. It is all relative. Sure, there were the few that were hardcore sociopaths, but the majority are trying to survie and have nothing to lose by using their means. The last I heard, 12,000 Pakistanies were killed by Israel in a recent war. Is that much different in regards to judging morals. Too me it is wrong, but then again, I dont live in the parts of Israel thata get bombed regularly by Hamas.

I personally like the tattoos and am fan of the romanticized gang life stories such as Blood in Blood Out, but in reallity estos gueyes hacen a la gente verse mal. We need to educate our people so that they are on the same playing field as the rest of America and not trapped in a sub-culture of destruction. We need programs such as the Dream Act and other bills passed to help those coming in; otherwise being a foreign national will criminalized and the cycle of destruction will continue.
Oh, and facial tattooing is common where I live in Riverside, CA. It’s mostly the urban Hill Billies with their Tap Out t-shirts and stupid lifted trucks with the face tattoo. These Mara’s, especially the 1st, 2nd, and 5th photos, have pretty sweet looking tats, way better than any Riverside bro tattoo.

I personally don’t judge anyone, and deal with gangs almost every day. I don’t defend gangs, and I don’t defend the people who throw stones at them. I believe we are all a product of our environment, and grow into what we are taught, and our upbringing has a lot to do with it. I am currently in law enforcement, and grew up in D.C. with 7 sisters and a brother. My parents lived paycheck to paycheck, and my sisters all shared a room (my friends called it the barracks). Anyway, my parents divorced when I was 15, and I became very wild. I became rebellious because I was hurt, and felt that one parent was weak. Eventually I got kicked out at a young age before I even finished high school. I didn’t have anywhere to go, but with my friends. Some of you now are saying to yourself right now one of two things; either, damn he had it bad, or he had a whole lot more than I did. For this reason, that is why we shouldn’t judge people. You don’t know what I have been through, and I don’t know what you have been through. I have friends that are in gangs, and I also have friends that are politicians, I have one of my arms sleeved in tattoos as well as the magority of my back. I put on suits and walk into court rooms and deal with both sides of the law. I am Italian (more or less white) and my wife is black. What I’m getting to is this. The only people I judge are the wannabe gang members who actually grew up in a nice house, and had parents that tried to put them through college. One day they heard a Weezy song, and now all of a sudden they are running with the Bloods. To me that is a slap in the face to one of these people that never had a chance, and if given a chance would not be in a gang today. Think about it!

I am in El Salvador right now and have had two situations with gangs…one that had full face tats….scary as sh**. I live in Honduras and do volunteer work…and I work with the poor…the poor so poor poor kids in LA are rich…and there are a lot of kids NOT in gangs. So any of you can make the choice to be in it or not. I FELT SORRY FOR that guy with the face tattoos…because he was NOT proud of them as he had them covered in make up…which made him look like a scary clown. I do not care if the police are after you or not…if you get the tattoos because you are proud of your gang and what you do…why hide it. Pretty sure these gang guys were extorting the bus workers…nice. And was worried we and all our belongings would be robbed…not a nice feeling. We got off another bus early as we were being surrounded by 8 gang members…again not a nice feeling. I have a non-affiliate gangster tattoo that his hidden on my arm. when I get jailed and photographs they dont even see it. Those crazy hondurans are hardcore – there is no going back to tattoos on your face. So glad I didnt but my tattoo on the top of my hand like I planned. the tatoo guy talked me out of it. Now I live a normal life and that tattoo is discreetly hidden away.

That the reason we join a gang is to feel the love, respect, and to be missed when your not around. These feelings that I just mention I never got at my home. I found this discussion looking up tattoos and just from reading a little bit i gotta say this. Its real easy to look down on people that pull sh*t to get by if you grew up in a family that had money and never went hungry and i don’t mean “pasta again? i want steak” i mean day in day out for month with maybe a meal a day. well just because you live in LA doesnt mean you become an automatic gangster, not all the young crowd is into gangs in LA, most of them know the consequences because they have seen it first hand in the streets of LA without even being in a gang, most young people have seen killings robbings and any other type of crime you can imagine, I believe gangsters as for the most part, most came from families who have been stuck in this cycle for generations and actually is an ignorant thing but one cannot explain why just like i can argue that even though you grow up in raw environments,THERE IS ALWAYS CHOICES! For the most part i believe every gangster was once a kid with dreams striving for some sense of an identity, some sense of progress toward that “dream” and a gang or just the crimes alone offered a big plate of false lies towards that dream. My family grew up in the LA area and mostly on the east of LA, west, and south central, I have members that confessed only some of things they did as young knuckle heads, things they still carry on to this day and somethings they take to the grave and coming from environments where they ran a couple blocks and plugged it with cartel dope with gang muscle and higher ranking supervisors behind them, they came from environment where cops and enemies get shot at with ak47s not little water gun .22 caliber pussy bullets, in environments where rivals planted home made bombs into each other territories for certain objectives, and yet these members are alive and have become very good members of a productive society, they are self made men and women who see reality and despise the modern young wannabe knuckleheads who know nothing of what gangs are really about and despise them even more when the parents either dont care or condone they kids activities or play the stupid part that theyre son or daughter wouldnt be capable of such thing when they cant even tell how raggedy and ghetto theyre kid dresses or how dat kids mouth could get him in a world of eternal pain…
gangs have been around probably since the dawn of time…think indigenous African tribes, the norse vikings, european crusaders, etc. etc. yea, in some instances they’re drastically different, but they’re still on par with operating under a ‘gang mentality’. there is no REAL stopping them. the only thing we can do is hope they disappear but there’s a fat chance that will ever happen. without imprisoning each and every member, they’re practically here to stay. should we just get used to them? should we just keep going about our daily lives and leave them to their own device? i don’t know really. the only people i feel bad for are the everyday citizens in gang infested neighborhoods who have to deal with something that they don’t want to. if i was to offer any sort of intelligent answer, i’d say that the regular citizens need to put their homes up for sale if at all possible and get the hell out. sure it may be hard, but impossible? highly doubtful.

well in my job i deal with alot of gangs so cal gangs northern gangs pretty much any gang. and in my dealings with some of ” the hardcore bangers ms13 mexican mafia etc” they are really hardcore while their homeboys are around but when they are in cuffs and its nobody there but their charges they are lil girls. yes sir no sir as nice as they can be. because they already have seen and felt how the gang life is.. when your getting put in the car and all your homies are saying we will take care of you while your down.. we got your back but but most the time they dont send you to jail with your homies.. and while your down not able to put in work they wont even send you money for some soups and chips.. now how is that taking care of you because prison food sucks and you cant hardly live off of it..so when you finally get out if ever they dont even wanna have anything to do with that stupid bullshit anymore because its just the scared trying in give fear and voilence so i say to the people that are in gangs..why why why because when you are down you homies and got you anymore.. they got somebody new to take the fall and do all the dirty work for the leaders
