Welcome back!

All women love to feel sexy, and in the realm of waistline and body art, it doesn’t get any hotter, sexier or more sensual on a woman than waist chains, body chains and belly bars, that will indisputably make your man quiver and turn heads at every slinky move of your hips and bodacious bod. While belly piercings might not be for the faint of heart, you can still get your sexy on with a plethora of stunning waist and body chains which cascade down the most sensual part of a woman, without having to undergo the ‘needle.’

Waistchain_10sfw

One woman is on the cutting edge of design in the art of creating waist art ‘to die for’ in sensual accessories.

Born and raised in the manufacturing and design of jewelry her entire life, and a native New Yorker, Rhonda began working for her family’s jewelry business as a young girl. With a long lineage in the jewelry industry, her grandfather was one of the first costume Pearl manufactures in Brooklyn, and her father was one of 4 manufactures of the mood ring amongst countless other forms of jewels.

In the 1970’s, Rhonda owned 3 jewelry stores, but pressures of running the businesses forced her to close them to raise her children. Now she owns her own chain factory, bringing her unique talent and designs to eBay for more than 5 years, and currently in the process of creating her own website.

As a certified gemologist amongst other degrees, she was the first to ’show the belly’ on eBay and began the whole belly body chain craze, doing most of her own modeling.

“My passion is to design jewelry to make women feel sexy.” says Rhonda. “Sexy is a state of mind no matter your size.”

Belly Piercing and Belly Bars
With very little information available on the internet or otherwise, I ‘took one for the team’ to learn first-hand in my quest to ascertain more about belly piercings.

It may not be for the squeamish, but the beauty and steaminess of a woman’s navel dressed in fine fashion jewelry is far reaching. Ahem.

You might be surprised to learn that navel and nipple piercings are 2 of the longest types of piercings to heal due to the depth that they’re pierced beneath the skin. It can take anywhere from 3 up to 12 months to completely heal internally, depending on a variety of factors — health, weight, diet, clothes, profession, and above all, how stringent you are in its care. The surface will typically heal within 1 month.

Your navel is at the ‘hinge’ of your body. I for one can attest that in the beginning, you will not be able to bend at the waist for some time. At nearly a month since the piercing, I can now bend slightly, but touching it is still relatively painful. One good result of this is that I have developed better posture while sitting at the computer for hours on end.

There is a vast difference in a belly ring and belly bar piercing — they are 2 different forms of piercings. Do some searches on the internet to decide which type of jewelry you prefer before taking the plunge. A belly ring will require a set of pliers to change the rings, which you may not be able to easily do yourself. Belly bars have a removable ball or gem at the top — far easier to change jewelry, and typically very secure with a screw top.

I for one prefer the look and designs of jewelry for belly bars, for which you should stick to something that won’t dangle and get caught on anything during the healing process. The jewels will position directly inside the navel and chains will cascade downwards from there.

Belly rings are also subject to a lot of movement, whereas belly bars will not get knocked around as much, thus making for a quicker healing.

Surprisingly, there was no blood from my fresh piercing, despite the fact that my piercer “lost the lead” after the piercing, as I lay there with clenched teeth for what seemed like an eternity — at least 5 minutes — before she was able to thread the belly bar through to close it, something she stated had never happened to her before.

Piercing Process
While I do not know if the practice is standard procedure, I can tell you the process that I underwent. I had forgotten the card reader for my camera which I was going to use to photograph the process, but for those who may get queasy, you are probably thanking me for it.

Tools and materials that were used during the procedure were
• Sterilized medical clamp style pliers
• Sterile pair of tight-fitting plastic gloves
• A cork, also sterilized
• Sterilized 14 gauge needle lain upside down within its package which the piercer would not reveal to me, a practice she used to prevent instilling fear or anxiety. They are typically as thick as the bar or ring which should be 14 gauge.
• K-Y Jelly to promote an easy insertion of the belly bar

Do’s and Don’ts of Belly Piercings
If performed while one is ill-educated in proper practices or done by a poor professional, you will very likely suffer severe infections, and lose your piercing altogether in effort to heal. Follow the Do’s and Don’ts below and you should have little or no difficulties. Happily, my piercing looks now just as it had at the very time of my piercing, minus the slight red inflammation which lasted but a few hours.

waistchains_1asfw

DO’s of Belly Piercings
Do your research to find a highly qualified piercer in your area — this is not the type of thing that cheaper is better. You want your piercing to last you your lifetime and without complications.

You will not likely receive any topical freezing prior to your piercing, so be forewarned. In the words of the artist who performed mine, “If you can’t cut the pain, you don’t deserve one.” Take some painkillers prior to your departure to the parlor for those who do not have reactions to them. I was severely distracted by the throbbing pain while driving afterwards, so try to have someone drive you home. But don’t let the notion of pain throw you off — it’s nothing that painkillers won’t be able to keep at bay for the first 2 to 3 days.

Countless individuals are allergic to nickel, for which I also suffer from as one of my forms of contact dermatitis — a localized rash or irritation of the skin caused by contact with a foreign substance. Although gold has a small quantity of nickel in it, I am able to wear it, so my first reaction was to buy a solid gold bar for my piercing. You will not likely find a piercer that will use it for your piercing.

H2Ocean_sfw

I was fortunate enough to find out second-hand of a woman with the same problem and did so. The piercing would not heal due to the porosity of the gold, and had to switch to a hypo-allergic bar. It healed within a month enough to replace it with the gold bar. I was able to acquire a nickel-free stainless bar through my piercer.

The navel is a depressed scar that has a tendency to collect dirt, and if not dried properly can be subject to fungal infections even when not pierced. Once pierced, it’s much more crucial to ensure extra care for cleaning to prevent infection — an issue which cannot be emphasized strongly enough.

Prior to stepping foot in the parlor for your piercing, make sure to purchase a liquid solution of dead sea salt to have on hand which will work both to cleanse and heal your piercing. Use it twice daily — spray and allow to dry naturally. H2Ocean Spray came highly recommended to me. It consists of purified water, sea salt, Lysozyme and Sodium Benzoate. Lysozyme exists in our bodily fluids naturally, to protect us from airborne bacteria. The Coral Reef Sea Salt contains over 82 essential trace elements and minerals used to help in healthy cell regeneration.

If you find that you are still having a difficult time with the healing process after several weeks, use another alternative to wash your piercing such as liquid anti-microbial or germicidal soaps like Provon.

Wash your hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap prior to cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason. Use soaps like Provon in the shower once a day. H2Ocean or warm saltwater soaks can be used up to 2 times a day.

Wear loose clothing for the day of your piercing that will not put any pressure on your navel.

Dry your navel thoroughly after showering with a paper tissue, as towels can harbor bacteria.

Give the piercing some sunshine if you’re able, as it aids in producing Vitamin D which helps promote healing, and minimizes infections.

Belly_Piercing_5sfw

DON’Ts of Belly Piercings
Hands off the belly bar! Rotating your jewelry during the first 3 to 4 weeks will only create friction on the healing tissue, irritating the flesh and prolonging your healing. Touching your piercing can introduce bacteria — your hands have no place near your healing piercing.

No soaps! They will not only kill off the bad bacteria, but the good bacteria as well which is essential for your body to heal. Soaps also often leave behind residue which can irritate your piercing and prolong your healing.

No Polysporin or any other creams or ointments. These tend to clog the piercing, making it difficult for the healing tissue to breathe.

No alcohol, peroxide or iodine, as these forms of products are far too harsh and damage healing tissue, making for a difficult healing period.

Do not go into any open bodies of water — the sea, a pool, bath or hot tub during the first 2 months of the healing process.

If you find ‘crusties’ on your piercing, do not pick these off. They are dried lymphatic fluid which your body secretes as it heals — a natural part of the healing process. Soaking with warm water is all you need to easily remove these by a tissue, but be certain to have sterile hands.

Any discharge of a milky white substance is this natural healing process, and nothing to be alarmed over, providing it’s not thick and yellow — a sign of possible infection. This may last from 6 to 8 weeks. I for one have not had any of this occur, so it won’t necessarily happen to everyone.

Tight clothing at your waistline such as pantyhose, tight pants or skirts during the healing stage can cause the piercing to grow out, meaning that the piece of flesh taken by the piercing gradually diminishes until the ring comes out. Try to avoid synthetic fabrics that don’t allow the wound to breathe. After the healing process you’re fine to wear whatever you wish.

Do not replace the ring during the healing phase, as you will lose the piercing. No replacing the ring with a sleeper, as the sharp hinges can tear the inside of the wound, resulting in an infection, and increasing the possibility of the piercing growing out. Removing the ball from a belly ring yourself will require a circlip plier. Attempting to do so yourself will likely damage the ring, making it impossible to get the ball back on the ring — see your piercer to do this instead. This is one more good reason to get a bar piercing rather than a ring.

Silver sleepers are particularly hazardous — as the silver oxidizes in the wound, it can cause allergic reactions and Argyria — a permanent black mark inside the wound.

No hanging waist chains or charms from your ring or bar during the healing process — they can get caught and tear the wound, hampering the healing process.

Do not allow your piercer to talk you into making the final decision for the markings for the piercing for the needle to penetrate as I did. The lights were shining directly in my eyes, and for obvious reasons, my head was not close enough to determine the proper positioning, which resulted in a slightly off-centered piercing.

Belly Bars with Waist Chains
After the healing process, let the fun begin! Sexy up that waistline with some smokin hot belly bars and bars with waist chains.

As for piercings, I poured hours into searching for information and basically came back empty-handed. I hope that this will help to inform others.

  9. Nope, this confirms it. Pierced belly buttons just aren’t sexy!

  10. Hi
I recently got my belly pierced (about a week ago)
and around the ball at the top its all read
    what does this mean?

  11. *red

  12. Jessica, since it’s been a week and it’s still red, I can only guess that you might have the beginnings of an infection, or possibly your body might be slighly rejecting the post material.

Make sure that your post is 100% nickel free. If not, I recommend replacing it with one that is. I’ve read reports of people rejecting piercings by not using very high-quality posts.

Also, I HIGHLY recommend that you get the Provon soap and H2Ocean spray. Links are provided in the post. If you’re unable to get the Provon for whatever reason, Dial liquid hand soap is second best, but make sure you get the regular one and nothing scented. I really do recommend the Provon though. I had a difficult time with mine healing until I started using it daily. This is one of the rare times I have ever promoted a product, only because it actually works above all others. There are also salt water wipes available from the same site that you can use daily.

Make sure you don’t touch it with hands that aren’t sterilized, and clean it with the soap in the shower where any film from discharge becomes softened to clean it off. Gently rub with the soap.

Follow the Do’s and Don’ts above and you should be fine. It’s been about 3 months since I had mine done, and I’m still not fully healed. I had my bar replaced with a solid gold one about a month ago, and not showing any problems with it. Just don’ use gold for at least the first month.

  13. Hi
    um whats posts?
the sray i have is like a tea tree thing n the guy that pierced it
    gave it to me.
and also today stuff came out of it but it was like hard
And i also got a different metal thing
like the part thats under the skin
i forgot what its called but they use it in heart
surgery and apparently its better for
kids and it also bends and i play soccer so i needed to get that
one. but i think im getting it checked tonight
anyways thank you for your help

  14. Hey dont worry about my last comment
its all good i just got it checked
and its all fine and yer
    but thnx

  15. By this post, I meant this article that you were commenting from, Jessica :-) Read above for the do’s and don’ts. You’ll also see links for the Provon soap and H2Ocean spray.

I really don’t recommend the tea tree product. It may be good for some things, but it’s too harsh for something like this. If it’s oil based it will also clog the piercing which is not good.

I’ve never heard of a post that can bend, but as long as it’s surgical steel and nickel free. Check that it’s 14gauge as well, the size that’s most common for belly bars.

Also, sports and other athletics including heavy exercising is not recommended for the first few weeks.

  16. haha
well in the first week of me having it i played sport
i think the bar i have is called bio plass
well the tea tree spray is what the guy gave me

  17. It makes me cringe to hear you use that, Jessica. But if you have difficulties with it healing, you’ll know where to come back to find answers :-)

  18. haha thank you for all your help
    x

  19. You’re welcome, Jessica :)

  20. what are the signs of infection …
and what do we do if we have it _?/

  21. There will typically be a lot of reddening to the skin Irem, along with colored crusting. If it’s not yellow or green, it’s a natural part of the healing process. If you are infected, then follow the do’s and don’ts written in this article.

  22. hey do you know where i can buy those belly piercing?

  23. can some one give me the link to buy the belly piercing please? ..

  24. ‘ where can i buy sthose belly piercings? (:
they are soo nice .. (:

  25. Camilla, the lady that was featured in this article by the name of Rhonda sells these items. The paragraph just beneath the last photo has a link to her site.

I can attest to the fact that she sells high quality piercings and waist chains, as I’ve bought many from her. She’s a real gem to work with as well.

If you have just been pierced, you’re going to need to wait to wear anything like what’s been featured here until you’re fully healed, which can take 6 months or longer, and you should wait for at least a month before using gold belly bars. Look for items that are nickel-free surgical steel. Rhonda carries them as well.

I will rarely ever help to promote anything that someone has for sale, but this lady is an exception due to how wonderful she is to deal with, and the quality of her items. I can’t say enough good things about her, and it takes a lot to earn that from me :-)

  26. hiya i was just readin up on your website and wanted to ask i think my piercin is infected its got what looks like a red blister next to it and has been pussing for a week now and everytime i wash it with salt water it pusses what shall i do ?

  27. That doesn’t sound good Kerry, you definitely have an infection from the sounds of things.

What kind of salt water are you using? I would only recommend something that’s designed specifically for piercings and not something you mix yourself, as the levels of salt could be too high or too low, and the water would not be sterile. The product I’ve linked to here for H2Ocean is very good, I use it myself. It’s a natural sterilizer that isn’t harsh on your skin, but will dry your piercing out if used more than twice a day.

So don’t use it more than twice a day, but be certain to use it daily. Also clean it daily with proper liquid anti-microbial or germicidal soaps like the Provon, which I’ve also linked to above. If you’re unable to order it for whatever reason, Dial liquid soap was also recommended to me by a piercer, but don’t buy anything perfumed — just the straight standard original antibacterial soap.

The same site that sells the Provon also sells packets of salt water wipes which are good as well. I use them after getting out of the shower when it’s been able to soak.

Follow the instructions above here, no touching without sterile hands, and no picking at it. I’ve been following these procedures myself and have had no problems.

I don’t know what your predicament is, but you may have been having a reaction to poor quality belly bars. Don’t go for the cheap bargains, you will pay for it. I only use nickel-free surgical steel bars, or gold, as I have allergies. But even gold will cause problems if you wear them too early after the initial piercing, you need to wait at least a month. I’ve read where other people have had problems due to using cheap bars and have lost their piercing altogether from infections and body rejections. Some may be very beautiful, but if you’re paying $10 and less, you’re asking for problems.

The lady that I wrote about here sells high-quality belly bars and is very versed in difficulties with piercings, as she’s had one for 20 years. She is the one who recommended the products I mentioned when mine wasn’t healing properly in the beginning, but she doesn’t sell them. She is very helpful and friendly. It’s very rare for me to sing such praises of someone, and she has definitely earned it.

  28. hey ,
    im just wondering .
im getting my belly peirced tomorow.
and im scared its going to get infected.
what do i use and what if im on a tight budget.
    my friend sujested using peroxide.
    i dont know :s
    please help

  29. No, please do NOT use peroxide on your piercing. I was told that it’s extremely harsh for something such as this and will do more harm than good. Read all of the do’s and don’ts above.

Make sure your piercer is using a stainless steel bar or ring that is nickel-free. Ask your piercer if they sell pre-mixed salt water for piercings. If not, find an outlet in your area that does. If you can’t find any locally, I strongly urge you to order the H2Ocean I have listed here. Use it 1 to 2 times a day, allowing it to dry on its own. The H2Ocean comes in a spray form.

For cleaning, use either Dial liquid antibacterial soap without any added fragrances or the Provon which I’ve linked to above. Clean it daily when you’re in the shower, using a few drops to gently rub with your hand. I would do this at the end of your shower when it’s had time to soak with water. After washing, cup your hand below the piercing to catch the water so it rinses the soap off well for about a minute. I was told by a very good and experienced person on piercings that the Provon is the first choice.

If you aren’t able to do this on your budget, I strongly recommend that you hold off until you can do this financially. Otherwise you stand to get infections and have a lot of pain with it.

  30. Hey
I’m 14 years old and really want a belly button piercing.
My mom is okay with it, but I just have to get the facts.
I read all of your article, but I was a bit confused about when to change the bar if they give you a titanium one. I can only wear gold earrings (no cheap metal ones!) so what do you recommend for my piercing. Would a bioplast/flexi ring be good for me? If so, when would I put it in?
Any other tips would help me, since I’m young. Thanks!
    Hannah =)

  31. Hi Hannah,

I have allergies to metals other than gold myself. Even so, it’s very strongly emphasized by many piercers not to use gold for at least the first month. Gold is a soft metal, and apparently people that have used them for the initial piercing have had great difficulties with the healing process, based upon what numerous piercers have told me. In fact, I was unable to even find a piercer that would use a gold bar, even if I brought my own.

The basic element that many are allergic to is nickel, as am I. I used a nickel-free surgical steel bar, exchanged it with a 14K gold one after a month, and had no difficulties.

I had also been strongly recommended to NOT use titanium by many piercers. Considering that there were so many that advised against it, I did not go that route.

I cannot say anything about a bioplast/flexi ring, as I’m unfamiliar with them. But do be aware that there are differences between a ring and a bar. You cannot wear both.

Research availabilities of gold rings before you make the commitment to one to see if that’s what you prefer. There are many beautiful gold bars available, but designs in rings is very limited. It’s also been said that rings catch on things more than a bar would. Ouch.

  32. im 14 years old. i got my belly pierced last year and would just like to say that it was not painful at all when i got it done. i had no numming cream or painkillers and it was onli painful to bend over for about 2 weeks. the best thing to do is to eat sugar before you get it done, because if you are a bit faint your sugar level will be higher and you wont feel as dizzy after. i felt no pain or dizziness at all. i have 6 piercings, and actuali i think my belly was probably the least painful. i have 2 in each ear lobe, one in my ear rim on my right ear and my belly. personally i think my ear rim was the most painful, and have heard that tounge piercings are painful but i dont have one so i cant really have an opinion on that. thank you for reading. :)

  35. Hey

I have had my navel pierced three times and each time I did something drastically wrong that caused my bellyring to be “rejected” I really want another one after at last finding out what caused this, but I’m afraid of further scarring to my navel, what would you reccomend?
How can I reduce the risk of my body rejecting it to 0% ?

  36. so i just got mine done like 2 days ago for my 15th birthday. when picking a place to get your peircing fine one that is creditable. most creditable shops will give you a variety of bars or rings. i knew where i got it done was good because i had actualy witnessed then peirce a friends navel so i know it’s clean. one thing i would like to add is that you should make sure that your peircer is aligning with your natural torso line, not the belly button. everyone’s is shaped diffrent and most are not perfectly circular. (like mine) if you align at the torso it may look off center if you bend and look at it but if you look at it in a mirror you will find that it tooks center. as far as pain… if you don’t think it’ll hurt your crazy. you are having a needle shoved through your body, you have to expect some pain. for me, the only thing that hurt was the needle going in but thats it. some could experience a pinch while they slide in the bar but a well skilled peircer wont make it hurt. you say you can’t afford to get it done or your not allowed? i have a few questions for you. A. don’t you think your parents are gunna make you take it out? and B. if you can’t afford to get it done professionaly then how can you assure your self that you are going to be able to buy care products or quality bars?

you can not reduce the risk of rejecting it to 0%. everyone’s body is diffrent and no one can tell you what will reduce the risk.

if you are in the reno area i would recamend the Black Hole peircing parlor on virginia St. 1(775)329-6010. they did an awesome job on my peircing.

  37. one lest thing. DO NOT TAKE PAIN KILLERS PRIOR. pain killers can thin the blood and cause alot of bleeding they also can increase the chance of you getting light headed or passing out. please excuse my spelling errors =P

  38. Thank you for this artical i got my belly button peirced when i was 14 i am 16 in 3 months and dont regrett a day of it.. very good piece Well Done :D Gemma Xxx

  39. hey,

iv had my belly pierced about 4 times over the last 2 years, and every time i get it peired it always gets infected :( , like the skin in the bar thats holding it in keeps on gettin smaller i have noticed until it gets to the most tinys amount when i have to take it out.
    iv tried salt water,
    surgical spirit,
i wash my hands every time i touch to clean it.
i have askd people and they have sed that its the way my body is responding, its forcing it out
but do you no what can help ?

    xx

  40. Sorry for the late response, I’ve had intermittent access to the internet for some time.

Shady, for 15 years old, you certainly have a great head on your shoulders :-) One thing though, I hope that your email address is not your main address, as you could be entertaining spam by posting it here. I can delete it for you from your comment if you like. As for the bleeding using aspirins, yes, it will thin your blood. I didn’t have any bleeding though, and for myself, if I were to do it again, I would use a painkiller, as the throbbing pain afterwards was so distracting, I couldn’t focus well to drive, and it was far more than I wished to tolerate ;-)

Shanice, what you describe certainly seems to me to be your body rejecting the piercing. Do you have allergies to metals? I had difficulties myself in the beginning until I followed Rhonda’s advice to use salt wipes once a day after showering.

But several weeks ago, I was carrying my dog to the vehicle to keep her out of the deep snow (she’s a small dog). She started squirming because she doesn’t like to be carried for any length of time, and tore my piercing. My body immediately began to reject it, and after only a few days it was nearly to the top of the skin, so I had to remove it.

I have allergies to metals myself. Using a nickle-free surgical bar worked for me for the first 2 months, which I switched out to a 10K gold bar. I will try this once more, but I’m considering looking for a higher gold content, as gold still has some nickle in it, a metal that I’m allergic to, as are many others.

Rhonda, the lady who was featured here and has written several comments is very well-versed with piercings. I’ll ask her via email if she has any further advice. If she has anything that may be helpful, I’ll publish it here.

Inge, good that you found out what you were doing wrong, but as for the scarring, I really don’t know what could possibly be done to prevent it. It’s a natural healing process for the body.

Rhonda, it’s wonderful to have you visit, and looking forward to seeing your new lines :-)

  41. Hey Everyone!

I recently got my belly button pierced again, because the first time I got it done it got infected and I had to take it out. I just want to say that I am sort of upset by all the posts I am reading from people who’s bodies “rejected” their piercing! This sounds kinda scary to me and makes me regret even having done the piercing in the first place!

I feel as though it is only a matter of time before my body too rejects my piercing. And what If I am struggling with my dog or something and it tears!

I don’t know…I’m just freaking out at the moment because I was always under the impression that once you do it and as long as you take good care of it you are set for life. Also, I am really turned off by several posts I’ve read by people who say that they were left with freaky scars.

I’ve only had mine repierced for about 2 weeks but I am already thinking about taking it out. It seems like such a costly enterprise just to keep it in and almost “be waiting” for an infection to happen.

Also, I live in Texas and the summer’s get really hot so I’m wondering how I’ll survive without an infection and I’m thinking it might be smart to avoid the cost and hassle and just take it out right now to avoid the scars and pain.

What do you think? Please respond at your earliest.

    Thanks so much,
    Sam

  42. Basing your experience on others is not something I think you should have to fear, Sam. After reading this post and comments, you should have a good grasp on how to avoid infection. You’ve come this far, I wouldn’t recommend removing it if you’re not having problems.

Most people are set for life when it comes to a piercing, it’s just that you really hear the negatives in this kind of an article from people searching for help. There’s very little on this topic that’s widely available.

Rhonda was actually very surprised to hear what had happened with mine and felt that it may either not have been done properly or deep enough. The piercer did have a problem when she did mine, so there’s a possibility that she messed up to begin with. I couldn’t see what she was doing from my angle, I only felt the pain ;-)

It’s vital that you have the piercing done by someone who is very good and reputable, and follow these guidelines here to keep it clean and sterile. I am going to be trying it once more myself in a few months after giving it considerable time to heal.

  43. ha ha no way it’s my main one. it’s the one i use only for things like this =] thanks for the concern.

  44. Thanks. I had been ding some of the thigs that you suggested not to, because I didn’t get pierced profesionally. I will no better no to stop doing some of these things and now know what to do instead to ensure a healthy recovery. Thanks again.

  45. hey
i got my piercing done today and everything was okay
when i came home i felt so guilty that my mum doesn’t like it and i still got it done and i just wanted to please her
    so i took it off
and cleaned the place with spirit and warm water+salt and i put a plaster around it.
what is the chances of it getting infected and what should i do?
    could somebody please help me?
    thank you x

  46. Hi Lara, I don’t profess to be an expert, but I should think if you clean the area daily with non-perfumed antibacterial soap in the shower every day, it will heal and close fine. Don’t touch the area without sterile hands, and don’t wear anything tight around your waist as it’s healing, much like healing a navel piercing to begin with.

I would recommend Dial liquid hand soap, as you aren’t following through with keeping it to warrant ordering the Provon soap. That’s all that I’m doing, and it’s healing perfectly well.

  47. hey deborah, thank you for your help
i have been doing that, i clean it 4 times each day, and i am using antibacterial soap to wash my hand before i touch it.
i am not wearing anything tight around it but i have a dress and its belted, and i have a party on saturday, do u think it’d be okay to wear it by then?

and by the way, would i be able to get the piercing done maybe next year or the year after if i consider it?
    please reply x

  48. No problem, Lara. Unless you’re doing activities to either get dirty or sweaty, I really don’t think you need to clean the area more than 1 to 2 times a day. It needs time to dry to be able to heal as well.

I think you should be fine by next weekend, but I wouldn’t wear the belt any tighter than what feels comfortable. Your piercing is very fresh, whereas mine had been healing with the bar for 9 months. A piercing can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months to heal, but I believe a large part of that is due to the body healing around a foreign object, and deeply pierced.

It’s been a month since mine was taken out. Based on what Rhonda informed me and my sense from my own body, it should be fine to repierce after several months. The hole for mine is already completely closed up on the exterior.

You may not even have much scar tissue considering there was no time that your body was healing around an object.

Rhonda had recommended NOT to pierce the exact same spot as the first one.

  49. Hey I got my belly dont 2 days agao and i was wondering why i almost passed out, it was a good thing my best friend and dad were there.
also i think my belly is weird cuz i could bend over today and it didnt hurt.
and also it didnt hurt when i slept on it.
Is there something wrong with me feeling fine when i bend over and stuff?
    Thanx Kayla

  50. Kayla, that is the first that I’ve ever heard of anyone nearly fainting. Could you have perhaps been very nervous when you went in, and it happened due to stress? There are countless health reasons that this happened which was merely escalated while the piercing was done, which wouldn’t really directly be related to having it done for the average individual.

I do find it unusual that you haven’t felt pain while bending or sleeping on it with it being so fresh, but that doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong.

  51. hello everyone i just got my belly done last week and i was wondering around the belly ring is red and a lil swolen is this bad there is puss or nothing coming out of it but it really red. what does this mean? :) thank you

  52. Vanny, while it doesn’t sound as though it’s infected, having no puss or secreting fluids, it does sound to me as though your body is having a difficult time with it if it’s still red and swollen a week later.

Many people have allergies to nickel. Perhaps your piercer didn’t use a ring that’s nickel-free surgical steel? I would call them to find out. If so, then I would suggest changing it out to one that is.

If your body cannot adjust to it for whatever reason, it will begin to reject it.

  53. hehe interesting blog.

  54. I think im getting my belly done in a couple of weeks, i am really scared its going to really hurt. i have to piercings on each of my earlobes do you think my bellly will hurt more than my ears? x

  55. Hi, I really want to get my belly button peirced but i am really nervous that it will hurt. And i dont want it to get infected. What can i do to prevent it from getting infected other than not touching it with my hands. (what kind of soap/cleaners)

  56. When you get your beely button pierced, its not the piercing itself that hurts. I didnt even feel the needle. It wasnt until they put the actual ring in that I felt like a pinch. The pain was not bad, though. Do not go with what others say to give you your final decision on whether you should get the piercing or not. We all have different bodies and we are going to react in different ways. Its best that if you really want to do it, just go for it. In piercings, the pain only comes from the healing. Some are going to heal faster than others, for some it didnt hurt as much and so on. Just listen to the dos and donts and youll be alright. =D

  57. Me and my friend had our bellys peirced yesterday, i had it from the middle to the bottom to be more unique. the lady said that mine would take longer to heal than my friends, but my friends is fine she said she can bend and sit down and it doesnt hurt at all, where as mine is quite painfull, the underneath part is still quite red and to the right of it there is a small red patch that is really sore, is this normal? i am cleaning it with antiseptic stuff that the lady gave me twice a day and i make sure its dry when i shower, how long should it take for it to stop hurting and for the redness to go away?

    awaiting your reply
    tayla x

  58. Ummmm… VERY helpful tips but not all true, i got mine done last year, and i found the sea ACTUALLY made it heal faster, the sea acts as a salt wash which helps remove bacteria from the piercing and cleans it, n with super clean Barbados sea water, everything went well… i also used alchol at night, it’s fine.

  59. Hi,
I was just wondering If I should actually get my belly pierced. I have been wanting to get it done for over a year now, It is now around 2 weeks away from the summer holidays (When I am getting it done) and I was thinking about the good and bad points of getting it done, I am only 12– Is it still a good idea to get it done??
    Thanks!

  60. Heyyy

I am thinking about getting my belly button peirced and i was wondering what the difference between the bars and the rings, and what are the pros and cons of both. THANKS!

  61. Hey.
So, I’ve been wanting to get my belly button done for about a year or so, I’m fourteen now. I finally persuaded my father to let my get it done. The conditions he had included, no tattoos, and no more piercings.. for a while. Haha.
Right now, I’m worried about it getting infected. I’m going to a camp in August, and I would like to participate in the swimming and such activities. I was wondering if I would be able to do so, if I cleaned it right after. [when I say right after, I'd be worrying about it the whole time, freak out, run out of the water and clean it. haha] I’m definitely willing to go buy the salt-water, and such various items to clean it. I’d really like to get the salt wipes, seeing as it would be handy at camp.
My main concern though is sports, I am in wrestling, softball and taekwondo. These things are VERY important to me. I would like to be able to participate in these particular sports. I’m thinking of quitting taekwondo soon though, it’s just too much for me right now. Haha. Wrestling starts in November. If I’m getting my belly button pierced in July sometime. Would I be able to continue wrestling without too much pain? There’s about.. four other girls on my team that also have their belly buttons pierced, and they seem fine.. But I know not to base what I do on what others are saying. [I've read the article and all the posts. haha]

Anyways, I’m sorry for such a long post. But I just want to get all my facts and such likely things straight before I go through with this.
    Thanks.
    -Libby

  62. Libby, I really don’t recommend that you should get the piercing done at this time considering the sports that you’re going to be participating in, I would hold off on it for now. The swimming is a major factor. You cannot take a bath or go into bodies of water like swimming pools, lakes, etc for a minimum of 2 weeks after a piercing, it can very likely become infected — it needs to heal to some degree first. Don’t forget that it can take 6 months to a year to fully heal.

While some have reported no pain, I couldn’t bend at the waist easily for at least a month without pain.

Don’t apologize, it was helpful to know your situation before being able to give you my advice on it. All the best to you in your sports :-)

  63. Hi,

There’s so much useful information in your blog – you managed to answer a lot of questions. I had no idea that piercings shouldn’t be turned in the first couple of weeks of healing – thought that they had to be turned to stop it sticking to the skin!

Was hoping you would be able to answer a qeustion for me. Have wanted a piercing for quite a long time now, and have finally toned up my stomach so have achieved my goal. However, my worry is what it will look like when pregnant and will I have to take it out then, and what would it look like then. As I’m only 21 I don’t plan to have children now, but maybe in three years . . .

    Thank you in advance

    Angel

  64. I really appreciate the advice. =]
The time that I’m going to camp would be August 10th to 16th.
And I was thinking of getting it done tomorrow [July 21st]
Although I do love swimming, I guess I could sit out and.. knit? I don’t know right now, but it’s fine.

Also, I quit taekwondo. I’m just too lazy to go, plus I’m sick of having to spar guys who beat the pulp outta me. So, since I’m no longer participating in taekwondo, do you suppose it would be alright?

Haha. Once again, I’m leaving you with a long post.
    -Libby

  65. I pierced my own belly button at 14.
However, when I pierced it, I didn’t do it deep enough, so there’s not enough tissue in front of the belly bar itself. I want to wait until I’m 18 and get it repierced by a professional, but I had the bar out for about 2 months and it hadn’t closed up at all. Is there any way I can get the piercing to close up after it heals?

Like, would it be possible for me to stretch the skin a bit by putting a 12 gauge in (its 14 now) and then taking it out to let the skin close, or would that just damage the piercing?

In all honesty, the piercing LOOKS fine, but I’m just scared that the bar will get caught on something and rip out.
    :/

I have pictures if you’d like to see.

  66. I havnt got my bellybutton done yet but ur website has gave me a lot of info on what I shud do and what not 2 do when I do get it done. Now I no what all I need 2 do when I do get it done. Thanks.

  67. hey,
i just fancied dropping a comment to say that yes, your article is very good, but not entirely accurate. I had mine done about a year ago now, and i followed guidelines that were nowhere nearly as strict as some of the ones you have stated above.. for instance, i could bend over and sleep on my piercing painlessly after about.. 2 or 3 days ? Also, i had gone in a sea, a pool, a bath, and a hot tub, all within several weeks of my piercing, and it was absaloutly fine! I am aware that everyone is different, and different peoples bodies have different healing processes, duhh! Obviously girls, take precautions and good care of it, but you dont need to go to that much trouble!

  68. sexy pics. i m a lover of these sexy belly buttons.

  69. well i got my belly done, in Bali,
but so far the heeling process is going great,
and i’v had it for about 4 weeks now,
if i treat it correctly, and do everything right,
will getting it done in bali (by a profectional in a tatto salon)
    affect it at all ?
