Gorillas Ms Manners would be Proud of
Table manners, such as they are for Ms. Manner’s dining social skills, would include napkins to maintain integrity at the table. So too does it apply for gorillas — naturally.
Table etiquette is high on the gorilla’s agenda when the animal has finished eating, researchers have found.
They use ’serviettes’ of giant marantaceae leaves to wipe their face and hands after eating their favorite meal — the oily detarium fruit.
Experts from the Zoological Society of London made the discovery while watching the animals in the West African bush of Gabon, reports Metro.
Dr. Noelle Kumpel said, “We were amazed to discover that gorillas use these leaves like napkins, and it demonstrates we still have plenty to learn about these incredible animals.”
So unremitting are the gorillas in using the ’serviettes’ that they have become an important clue in tracking them — simply follow the trail of oily leaves.
Dr. Kumpel stated, “Our gorilla habitat officer has been working there for six years and it was new for her.”
I know of a few humans who could take lessons from these primates. It ain’t pretty.
