Hello,
I'm from the Faroe Islands and I'd like to shed some light on some misinformed information in this article.
The thing is, this has nothing to do with us proving to be men(this is a very old tradition, why should we prove ourselves as men when we we're desperate for food? We were forced to do it!). We do it because it's very very good food. Yes it has become quite toxic but it's still eatable. Hence, we still hunt the whales so we still can have some of our own special food.
I bet that all of the Faroese people that still approve of the whale hunts would prefer whale meat and blubber a thousand times over any chicken or other mass-slaughtered animal.
Our whale hunts are controlled by ourselves so we, the Faroese, don't exterminate the whale population. We even track some of them to control so we don't overdo it, ourselves!
We completely understand that people from elsewhere think that this is disgusting and cruel from your point of view. Though, we have managed to stand our ground so far and we will try as long as our own country wants too! We are proud of our own traditions and culture, this is a part of it that is considered the greatest. Now if we stop and listen to all activist groups that want to stop us(not only whale slaughter, probably the birds that we eat as well), we will most definitely just be a few islands in the middle of nowhere with no appealing traditions other than sheep and fish(which, btw, everyone else in the world has).
Our whale slaughters are actually a tourist attraction as well. Not for activists.
To be honest, I've never heard of any other activist coming to the Faroe Islands trying to prevent a slaughter, other than Paul Watson. Yes, he was here in the 80's, he managed to stop one slaughter by endangering our men's lives(ramming boats and throwing gasbombs or something). Paul Watson was pursued away from our waters, he and two of his terrorist friends were even arrested for a few days I think. Since he did these terrorist attacks on our people, he was banned from the country even our sea borders.
Now, I've been trying to follow Watson a little bit and see what he's really doing. Trust me, if you google him you will find 1000 facts about him being a true terrorist to the human race and economy. Did you know that he sunk 6 ships in Iceland, in one night(yeah, ships on the bottom of the ocean don't really help whales, do they?)! People say that he's fighting for the right cause, but he's definitely not fighting it in a humane way!
Another ting that we certainly don't do while a whale slaughter is undergo is get drunk and celebrate. Nono, that we do after we're done distributing. If some drunks are present during the slaughter, that does not justify articles saying that everyone is drunk, remember, some people don't even drink alcohol!
If people really want people to stop being cruel to any animals and they got their wish come true, we would be eating pills made from synthetic chemicals that we created in a lab, wouldn't that be delicious?
We stand our ground until we are not able to. When that time comes we will stand down with a frown but that will only be it. We won't start a war, we're too bloody small to make a difference!

Best regards,
Hans K.

It's easy to see the tradition here--a group of people on an island where food is scarce and life is hard, finding techniques to harness available food sources. There is not one of us who would not have done the same thing from an historical perspective.

I live in Alaska, and, for thousands of years, the indigenous populations of this land hunted for whales to support their existence in an extremely harsh land. Over the years, as technology has increased thereby potentially increasing harvests, the Inuit, Inupiat and other groups here still celebrate by having traditional hunts, and, the meat is still a vital and necessary part of their subsistance living, but they manage to keep it a hunt and not a wipe out.

I am a hunter and fisherman, and I have eaten muktuk (whale meat) before. I do not believe that humans are an exempt part of nature, and that it exists outside of us.

That much being said, I looked at these images aghast. I'm not opposed to tradition, but I am shocked that this continues on as grand a scale as shown here. The Faroese have overcome a rocky landscape by building tunnels all over the place for roads. Certainly, they could find a way to celebrate tradition and harvest the whales, but do so on a lesser scale, as the indigenous of Alaska have done.

I'm reminded by seeing the wholesale slaughter of these animals of the mass killings of the North American buffalo, the musk oxen, and other herd animals that seemed normal to the people conducting the slaughter.
