These five prickly little critters are lucky to be alive after they were abandoned by their mother and their nest was destroyed.

The tiny, blind hedgehogs were rescued from a freezing barn by a farmer and handed over to an animal rescue centre.

One of their siblings died of the cold but the five spirited creatures, less than a week old, have gorged on goat’s milk and could soon be fit enough to be released into the wild.

Diana Lewis, who nurtured the orphans back to health, said they were close to death when they were rescued from the barn at Witheridge, North Devon, reports Metro.

She said: “They were found in the nick of time. Left much longer they would all have been dead.”

And they are not the only hedgehogs who will need looking after at the North Devon Animal Ambulance.

Ms Lewis added: “I’m looking after another six young hedgehogs at the moment as well — there are a lot of orphaned young right now. It happens every spring, but last year there was a second litter later in the year because of the warm weather. I expect that will happen this year again.

It will be chaos because there’s usually not enough food in the wild for the young in the late autumn.”

Uni the Hedgehog
Uni is an African Pygmy hedgehog. They are illegal in some states in the US but not in all. Uni eats bugs and ferret food. His owner takes him to the park pretty much every day.

Pokey the Hedgehog
The author writes that when he’s chewing on the towel, he is not trying to nurse. Searches on Hedgehogs will present countless interesting facts about them — when they smell something they like, they will chew it up, make a frothy substance from it and spit it all over their spikes. They do this to smell good! The owner states that Pokey did this with a piece of strawberry they gave him.

  8. You’re mistaken about hedgehogs not being cuddly. In 1998 my husband gave me a hedgehog for Mother’s Day. His registered name was Prickle Pickle Pig. We called him prickles. If the weather permitted he went everywhere I did, even camping. He usually road in the pocket of a hooded sweatshirt in cool weather. In the summer time he road in the pocket of an apron I made for him. It wasn’t uncommon for him to curl up in my hair, while I was at my computer or while I was doing my housework. He would sleep there for hours at a time. He was also fond of curling up in my lap with our dog, who he would allow to groom him. She thought he was her baby. Unfortunately he contracted pneumonia from smoke inhalation, when our house burned down. After months of antibiotics and breathing treatments he died in his sleep. I was heartbroken. I’ve had many small pets, if I ever get another it will be a hedgehog.
