I Will Follow!!! DO Follow

Welcome back!

Wherever you lead me, I will FOLLOW! We appreciate our readers and like to share the link love here at Life in the Fast Lane with the Do Follow plugin.

Most blog platforms have a built in default for the ‘NoFollow’ code. Wherever there is a link in a comment, search engines will not follow the link as they are crawling the internet, thus not providing backlinks and trackbacks. Its intended purpose was to help stop comment spam, but it doesn’t work. What it does do is remove some of the incentive for readers to contribute to your site by commenting on your posts.

If you’d like to share the link love and just say NO to ‘No Follow’, you can find the plugins for Do Follow at Andy Beard’s Ultimate List of DoFollow Plugins – Banish Nofollow From Comments and Trackbacks.

For those that don’t know about Akismet, it’s a great deterrent for spam filtering. You can get a free account for it here. It has been claimed that Akismet catches approximately 99% of all spam.

We also monitor all comments posted, so if you decide to spam us and try to slip through the filters, shame on you. Your comments will be promptly deleted.

Darren Rowse at ProBlogger has some excellent advice on his post for Google’s Verdict: Blogrolls Matter.

UPDATE:
Life in the Fast Lane first began implementing the DoFollow plugin in order to reward commenters from Blogs. That is to say it was meant to reward blogs, not business websites and other sites selling and marketing their products and wares.

Since early this year, a litany of ultra organized comment spamming has been going on, with never-ending sites listing DoFolow blogs for SEO purposes to gain backlinks to build up their page rank for websites. Far too many have come to abuse and take the good nature of sites such as this for granted.

Due to this, Life in the Fast Lane now employs Lucia’s Linky Love Plugin, rather than the DoFollow plugin, which rewards our regular commenters that like to play nicely.

In addition to the new form of DoFollow practice, Life in the Fast Lane will also be rewarding good commenters with CommentLuv, which will parse your RSS feed to grab your last post if you’re a blogger, and provide a backlink to it. You will be given the opportunity to choose from any of your last 10 posts. This will be effective as of December 6 2008.

DoFollow Bloggers
If you’d like to join the growing list of bloggers that are using the Do Follow plugin at Tricia’s Musings, you can apply at her page for DoFollow blogs.

Tricia’s regulations to be a part of her list of bloggers that are using the Do Follow is that you provide a blogroll either on your sidebar or on a page from your site that can be reached from the main page.

Her advice on adding blogs to your sidebar without suffering penalties:

If you want to participate in rewarding bloggers using Do Follow by listing their site with backlinks to them, simply create a name for the Blogroll such as ‘Do Follow Blogs’ (as we’ve done at Life in the Fast Lane), with the link to your post for your list.

This is not an ‘experiment’ to create backlinks for bloggers, it’s to compensate those that are rewarding others with their earned link love in comments and posts, and to create incentive for other bloggers to follow suit with the Do Follow.

The following sites were implementing DoFollow at the time of this initial writing:

  4. Hi Deborah!
WOW! Looks like you have a totally different list of DoFollowers than I do…which is great, as it means we’re spreading the word well around the blogosphere. I listed you on my list and hope you’ll reciprocate.
    Here’s my list.

BTW, I’ve also posted a follow-up about the BumpZee community for DoFollowers that Andy started…I also share where, when and how the movement started in simple non-techie English as I’m a notorious computer-dummy.

    That post is

I love your energy Deborah. Hope you’ll join us! :-)
    Peace-out,
    Ponn

P.S.I found your site by you faving me in my Technorati Favorites Link Exchange.

  5. Thanks so much Ponn! Good to see you on board.

I’ve added you to my list. Thanks for sharing the link to yours, I’ll add them as well. Hopefully this will help spread the word to use the Do Follow plugin.

Everyone participating really deserves some link love back!

I’ll check out BumpZee as soon as I get the chance.

    Cheers!

  6. My pleasure Deborah!

Girl…How did you do that so fast? I’m such a non-techie chick, that when I saw your list I was thinking, cutting and pasting the text first, then I’d have to copy the embedded link once at a time which would take forever. What’s the shortcut. I even asked a friend for her html code so I can just put it in. I’d love to add your list to mine!
    Please share how…
    Thanks, Ponn

  7. Woohoo, Deborah! You are hitting the blogosphere like a lioness! I read your do follow response on my blog and that reminded me to add you to the sidebar of my four active Blogspot blogs.

I will send a note to you when I am through. Have a great weekend and keep up the blogging.

  8. Hehe, I have no shortcut, wish I did. I copied your list, then manually added everyone by going to their sites and copying their URL’s from their home pages.

I’m pathetically HTML challenged. If someone has the means to do this quickly and easily, PLEASE let us all know! Once the pasting is done in WordPress, the links are broken.

  9. Deborah — Have your web guy create a separate page for the “Do Follow” page just as I have here. Then, go to your side bar and add in the “Do Follow” designation under Category or somewheres else. Check out my “The Article Writer” blog and look under keylinks. Click on the link and you’ll go to that HTML page. A lot easier that way!

  10. Hey Matt,

Wow, thanks! I’m a bit of a Drama Queen in case you hadn’t noticed yet and I’m passionate about what I write, hahaha.

    ‘A lioness’…hear me roar :)

Looking forward to hearing from vous. I’ve been so busy with working to tweak the blog and write that it’s been a little crazy.

You have a great weekend too!

  11. Thanks Matt! I’ll get on that for sure!

  12. Thanks for keeping the list going.

  13. Mark: I’m more than happy to keep the list going. Thanks for stopping by!

  14. Great that you’ve joined up.

    Welcome to the movement!

    David

  15. Thanks David!

From what I’ve seen, there’s a lot of people that aren’t aware that the the ‘No Follow’ is automatically built in.

  16. Hey thanks for adding my do follow blogroll to your post. :) The extra sites you added below it would make great additions to the blogroll too. :)

If anyone would like to join the Do follow blogroll just click my name in this comment and that will take you to the Do follow blogroll page.

  17. Thanks Tricia. I’m sure many of those participating here would appreciate the extra linky love!

  18. The I Follow Phenomenon…

A while back, in response to a post on Beta Blogger 4 Dummies, we removed the “nofollow” attribute from our html code to allow search spiders to find comments posted here.

The “do follow” movement has picked up steam in a major way. Randa Clay c…

  19. Please link us up! We’re on the “I Follow” or “Do Follow” bandwagon!

  20. Consider it done Magical Rose Garden!

I see you have a list of your own started, for which I’ve added here to help them as well :)

  21. Great to see you join the movement, and thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

    Ciao!

  22. I don’t follow, a couple of us have been having an interesting discussion about it if you’re interested.

  23. Hey!
Another on the list, I’m completely agree with the no-more no-follow movement. I have already installed the plugin some days ago.
    Regards

  24. Frucomerci: Good to see you on board too! I’ve added you to the list :)

FrankP: One thing that I would like to point out, is that you had taken slight advantage of posting a link back to your post in your comment with your cons against using Do Follow, on a post where I am rewarding those that ARE using it with links back to their sites, ahem.

I’ve left your comment in place, as I don’t want to be a Comments Nazi, but it also validates that any irrelevant comments can simply be deleted with one click, in reference to your views about spam. What doesn’t get caught by spam filters are easily deleted on a monitored blog.

I’ve left my own feedback on your post (providing it passes your approval to accept the comment of course). Andy Beard and several others have added their feedback which helps to further dispell the cons.

I can honestly only advocate No Follow for blogs that don’t monitor their comments. And those that don’t usually aren’t blogs that are worth reading much anyway.

  25. Thanks a million for the link. I’ll get started on my sidebar list right away!

  26. Where do I leave a comment to say I am participating? or is this only for PayPerPost Posties – which one blogger seems to imply?

  27. Simone, you would leave a copy right here in the comments section below. This has nothing to do with PayPerPost, it’s for bloggers using the Do Follow plugin.

  28. Yeah, I was hoping people would use them. They’re a bit smaller and more compact than Tara’s. You’re added, and thanks for the mention. Feel free to include the buttons in your post, if you want to.

Thanks for commenting! I’m gonna need to keep you in mind. The photography section could come in handy. Compulsory subject at the Uni, and I suck to say the least.

  29. Thanks Asgeir,

I’m going to get my webmaster on it when he gets back from sick leave. I’ll have to visit you to get the info for the code, and i’ll link you up so others can get it too.

    Cheers!

  30. Hi, Deborah,
I didn’t prepare any code, so that people could download the button they prefer, and add it however they like with whatever link they want to.

    http://www.asgeirhoem.no/wp-content/themes/3k2redux-klein/images/ifollow/blackbg_blue.png

Feel free to use the files on my server, but iit would be better if you stored it locally, though.

    Thanks for using it

  31. [...] Your page is on StumbleUpon [...]

  32. Thanks Asgeir! :)

  33. Eventhough Akismet can handle it very well, people can post “related comments just to have a link on that page. I like this movement, but I am just too scared to lose my pagerank by linking to a spam site.

  34. Audi,

For those that don’t monitor their comments closely or don’t have the time to do so, it might not be a good idea to remove No Follow.

I’ve recently added an additional spam filter for Bad Behavior which catches most anything that Askimet might miss:

    http://www.bad-behavior.ioerror.us/

There are additional alternatives for your comments as well, such as not permitting comments to post before admin approval, as well as not to remove NO Follow until a reader has left a minimum of comments on your site, such as 10 comments. You have the option to set the minimum requirement.

  35. Another one for your list! You’ve got my personal blog above, but thought you might like to add this one!

    http://www.ireland-rugby.com

  36. I fully support this “Do follow” movement!
I would really like to be added to the list and will do the same for you on my blog.

    http://www.lifelaboratory.com

  37. Thank you for adding my site. I’ve got the D-List on my site now too.

  38. Do Follow is great. I’m surfing around tonight just looking for interesting do follow blogs. :)

  39. Thanks AgentSully! Much appreciated!

  40. Thanks for stopping by Cynthia!

  41. I didn’t download a plugin, I just tweaked the wordpress source code slightly. I try to keep my wordpress site running 10 or less plugins at all times. On occasion, I find myself running 12-15, but I typically try to keep it around 10 plugins – seems to be more manageable.

If you’re like me and want to keep your plugins to a minimum, you can convert your site to a “do-follow” site by tweaking a single wordpress file as outlined here:
    http://i.nconspicuo.us/2007/05/14/add-your-blog-to-a-dofollow-list-get-rid-of-the-nofollow-tag-in-your-comments/

  42. Thanks for the tip! Great advice for those that aren’t techy challenged, as I am :)

  43. Gee, you just never know whose pages you are going to stumble. You know what I mean?!

  44. Hey, I followed your permalink regarding my post on ‘do following’, I really appreciate the link love, I think this is a great idea!

  45. I just joined the “do-follow “movement! Am I too late to join your list?

  46. Well, look who the cat dragged in, hey Matt? Haha. I have to start Stumbling more!

    Patrick, my pleasure:)

Lisa, I will add you to the list no problem.

  47. I also support the dofollow tag. I do delete all comments unless they directly relate to the post. I figure anything else is just spam anyways.

  48. Fashion Fotos, that’s just the ticket, all that’s required is to monitor your comments.

I use Askimet and Bad Behavior. So far they’ve been doing their job very well. Unfortunately some legitimate comments have been caught in the spam filters, which I’m not happy about, but the key is to monitor those as well.

I follow…is it too late to be included in this list????

  55. Hey, a big Mahalo for the add! However, I’ve put No Follow on ALL my blogs. Do you want me to send you the list?

  56. Hey, mahalo for the add, but I’m now doing No Follow on ALL my blogs. Do you want me to send you the list? Or can you retrieve them from my profile?

  57. As a tribute to those bloggers who follow links (remove nofollow attribute from links) in comments and trackbacks I have created a custom search engine to search within blogs that follow links in comments and trackbacks. Hope this will be helpful to bloggers who are in search of posts in their niche to comment on.

I am looking forward to your participation in this project. If you are willing to become a contributor please click on “Volunteer to contribute” link on the Custom Search Engine homepage. If not you can simply contribute by sending in the URLs of the blogs that follow links in their comments and trackbacks section.

Don’t forget to bookmark this custom search engine for your own use.

You can also add this search engine to your google ig homepage and also to your blog! Just visit the custom search engine homepage and you’ll find the links to add them.

Aziz, that sounds very interesting. Thanks for the info.

  59. Thanks for the list. I’ve joined the DoFollow movement too!

  60. Great to see you on board Steven :-)

  61. I DoFollow too. Can you add me to the list, please, Deborah?

  62. I also DoFollow and would love to be added :) . Excellent list!

  63. Thank you very much for the plug in. I have been reading allot about this movement and with my new blog just set up, I want to be a do follow dude too. Thanks

  64. I just installed do follow yesterday…thanks for having this list!

  65. I’m adding DoFollow to some of my sites too, the ones that allow comments anyway. It’s so much better for other bloggers, encourages people to actually comment and join in. It’s great stuff.

  66. We are interested to add to do-follow article

  67. I’m sorry, but I have to say no, Exporter. This is strictly for blogs that use the Do-Follow plugin for commenters. You are not a blog, let alone a Do-Follow blog.

  68. Great article! I was looking for some ways to change this! Thanks again!!

  69. Off course! your article is providing a great piece of information to all visitors.

  70. Wonderful Article! Thank you for writing such an informative piece! Thanks to you I’m now a “Do Follow” Too!

  71. Great article. I will install do follow on my blog. Thanks

  72. Please add me to the list if you like. I advertised your list on my site, http://www.businessbloggingguide.com

    Thanks a bunch!

    Wendy

  73. Wendy, I checked your site out to see if you are using the plugin, and after looking at more than 20 posts, there was not one comment left on any of them. In order to know that you have implemented the plugin, I have to view how comments are dealt with.

I left a comment on one of your posts. It’s currently in moderation, and should you publish it, I’ll check to ensure you’re using it. This page is only to list those that are using the plugin as my way of giving kudos for doing so. Thanks.

  74. Thanks for publishing my comment Wendy.

There is something that you may not be aware of. You are using the Blogger platform, which does not permit the DoFollow plugin to work. When I viewed the source for the comment, the rel=”nofollow” is in place.

I’m not certain, but I think that there is a work-around for that on the platform you’re using. Try posting some questions or doing some searches for the info that’s published at BumpZee for the DoFollow community. You might be able to get some help there.

  75. Hi, I’ve recently started a football themed blog on blogspot and was wondering if I will be able to use this plug in on my blog? I want other people to join in with the football banter!

  76. Is nofollow really that bad? Won’t google just penalize the entire dofollow list and all wld be for nothing?

  77. We just installed the dofollow plugin on our sites. The quality of comments is much better than it was.

  114. Thanks for the link list… The post was awesome .. Waiting for lots more updates…. Thanks for sharing…

  115. Not only will it help you, it has already helped you. I mean your page is ranked very well on Google and has a PR of 4. The only problem I see with this concept is with people taking advantage of the link love.

  116. Thanks for the do follow, and of course the resources you have here.

I hope you don’t mind, but I traffic-bugged your site, to gain you some extra respect and exposure. I like people who share the wealth. Good luck.

  117. The way your site is set up is quite ingenious. Going against the grain, and offering feedback for link juice. It is good that your site is so well moderated, and I think that is what makes the system work. Keep up the good work.

  118. I posted on this subject myself earlier, and it was a pleasure to read your view on it commenting. Cheers, bowlegged148.

  119. My friend, you kick ass! Your site is the greatest, thank you.

    Amazing. Thank you.

  121. Great blog! So much content its mind blowing!

  122. you can make comment to my do-follow blog too..

  123. Hi Deborah, after reading this post, I also do want to make my blog as do follow. But I am worried that it would decrease my PR as I would be giving away page rank juice to those who are commenting and number of spam comments would also increase.

But on positive side I am sure that after implementation of do follow plug-in, number of visitors would increase, for many bloggers would simply visit to leave comments to get back-links to their blogs.

  124. Thanks for explaining the do-follow rules of the game and also the list of blogs. I just installed commentluv and wanted to get lucia plugin but unable to find it…

  125. Thanks for the list of dofollow blogs, really helpful. thank you so much.Keep posting.:) More power..

  126. Thanks so much for the dofollow list. Much respect.

  127. Thanks for sharing this great list. It will definitely help me on the road to success. Regards!
