Welcome back!

imaginary_friend_Jon_MalipiemanI’ve seen plenty of weird things sold on eBay, including a man successfully selling his speeding ticket recently, but this one takes the cake.

Metro tells us a man is selling his imaginary friend on eBay UK — because he’s grown out of him. Last time I checked, he had already received 31 bids, and 12652 hits on the listing.

The listing reads: “My imaginary friend Jon Malipieman is getting too old for me now. I am now 27 and I feel I am growing out of him. He is very friendly. Along with him, I will send you what he likes and dislikes, his favorite things to do and his personal self portrait.”

Seller thewildncrazyoli, from Newport, has received questions including does he mind smokers?

Answer: “No he does not mind them. But he does not like people smoking right next to him that much. He likes bonfire smoke though.”

And is he single?

“Yes he is single at the moment. He used to be a bit of a player (well, a lot of one) but he has out grown that phase and is looking to settle down in a nice relationship.”

A picture of Jon Malipieman is posted along with the listing.

The highest bid currently stands at $3082.15 US with 2 days left till the auction ends. Postage is free.

Mr. Malipieman was not available for comment. He’s thought to be considering his options.

A note of interest on this seller’s feedback, his rating is -1 with 0% Positive, with only 1 bid in his history and negative feedback left for it. He’s been a member since 18-Feb-07 in United Kingdom, and registered as a private seller.

All of the bidders to date show no more than 10 winning bids in their history. Um, guys and gals — can I give you a little bit of advice from a seasoned eBayer?

UPDATE:
Silly me didn’t think to put thewildncrazyoli’s listing in my watch list to see what it sold for. So far no feedback has been left to investigate, and no results for completed listings for the item.

Success spawns copy cats, and this case is no exception to the rule. eBay UK has a number of new as well as completed listings for imaginary friends for sale. So far none have had any takers, other than a current listing for seller stavros2112 who is selling his imaginary girlfriend. His listing reads:

I’m selling Paula my imaginary girlfriend. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I’ve been with Paula for three wonderful years, but sadly it’s time to let her go. The photo shows Paula having lunch.

About Paula — she is a very warm and gentle girl aged 21. She is 5’ 6â€? tall, slim build and very sexy — long flowing blonde hair to her waist. Paula speaks eight languages.

stavros2112 currently has 8 bids, with highest bid going at $5.80 US, and 2 days left in the auction.

UPDATE 2:
It would appear that ‘Feebay’ in the UK has been delisting these sellers’ ‘items’, as all but 2 new ones have vanished, including stavros2112’s imaginary girlfriend.

My theory is that eBay is getting a little cranky about sellers listing intangible items.

There are 2 more new ones for laura1290 and spiritualhub. eBay UK is likely having a difficult time keeping up with the plethora of new listings.

imaginary_friend_with_tangible_sleeping_toteThis led me to investigate if the rage has caught on in the US. All but one were for valid listings of products. And this one was a little more ‘imaginative’ to keep eBay from pulling the plug. Imrastamama is selling their imaginary friend WITH tangible sleeping tote — also comes with ‘tangible’ list of likes and dislikes, and ‘tangible’ certificate of authenticity (item number 300110234060). There’s currently 9 days remaining for the listing, with 1 bid for $1.

I’d link to it for you if I didn’t fear getting my hand slapped by eBay, so you’ll have to check it out for yourself if you need proof of the pudding. I’ve added the latter 3 that I mentioned to my Watch List to keep tabs on what happens.

UPDATE on Imrastamama — As of May 11th, there are now 17 bids, with top bidder paying $285 US, and 8 days remaining in the auction.

Laura1290 doesn’t even appear in my watch list — it’s just vanished completely. How that happens is beyond me. Usually you’d see something that states the auction was ended early.

FINAL UPDATE — The listing for Imrastamama remained without additional bids to the bitter end. Then it too vanished just before auction close! Either eBay removed it, the seller gained a conscience, or the seller was just gaming eBay for publicity.

Spiritualhub’s listing continued without incident or bids. It remains in my Watch List as ‘Ended’.

Well talk about an anti-climax — that just took all of the fun out of it for me.

  1. Bizarre but very very funny!!!! Deborah
I wonder if he does housework, cooking, cleaning, etc. etc.???

  2. $3000+ for somebody’s imaginary friend? I love it. The free market does some really cool things. I am curious about the people bidding though. Wouldn’t a membership to eharmony be a lot cheaper?

  3. Kim, my understanding is that he isn’t working, so he’d best be doing SOMETHING to earn his keep!

Mark, that’s too funny, haha! I’m curious about the bidders myself. Since it didn’t show up in the completed listings, I’m wondering if eBay cancelled the listing, or forced him to, considering the $$ involved.

It may have even been a bogus listing with his friends bidding on it. I did see it with my very own eyes tho, so it wasn’t a false report from the media. Metro had his username spelled incorrectly, but being the little detective I am, I found him :)

  5. Trust Metro to find a story like that, they always used to cheer me up on the way into work in the morning!

I wonder if there’s any chance the seller will receive payment? I guess it’s just about creating a buzz and being able to tell everybody “that was me”.

  6. Michelle, I think you may have a point there about being able to say ‘that was meeee’. If he received any money out of it, it’s a big bonus, but I think that eBay put a stop to it.

  9. Hi,

The user id exist, but there is no evidence that this “imaginary friend” auction exits on ebay. Show me the proof or I will presume this is just a hoax.

  10. Believe as you wish Manny, but I did see the auction with my very own eyes, as well as others that were written up here. The seller was so successful with it that it spawned a lot of copycats.

Because the item was obviously not tangible, eBay canceled the auction prior to its closing, and did the same to other copycats.

Some sellers fought this by including tangible items such as a lunch box. There are devious people who will sell anything that they can get away with ;-)

  12. Ha Ha this just gets better. Today I saw a post about elvis’ hair for sale – I’ve seen a used teabag, jetpack amongts other weird things, thanks.
