Japanese sex museums, called “Hihokan” which translates to “House of Hidden Treasures,” are typically located near Japan’s many onsen (hot spring resorts) in towns like Atami, Sapporo and Beppu. They’re very popular among tourists and vacationers, especially young couples … gee, I wonder why?

Sex museums seem to be the coming thing (pardon the pun) these days. Korea and India have each opened one, and so has Australia, though the small National Museum of Erotica that opened in 2001 closed two years later. Even conservative China has gotten into the sex act, and about 500 visitors each day can now view over three thousand erotic artifacts at the China Sex Museum in — wait for it — Guangdong.

It’s Japan, however, that boasts both the longest history of sex museums and perhaps the greatest number of them. Japanese are no prudes when it comes to sex, as the hundreds of Love Hotels scattered across the nation can testify.

Privately owned and operated, the variety and type of exhibits pretty much depend on the predilections of the owner. Thus, the sex museum in the southern resort town of Beppu features an overabundance of anatomically correct animal dolls frozen forever in the act of love. Not most people’s idea of what the afterlife is like, but hey, things sure could be worse!

Wildlife going wild isn’t what most visitors are looking for, of course, and Japan’s sex museums don’t disappoint. One, er, outstanding feature of Hihokan is their vast collections of dildos and other artificial phalli, one particularly noticeable example at the Beppu standing nine feet tall!

Should the erotic exhibits leave you yawning, there’s nothing like a slide down the rod ride to perk you up in a hurry!

Not challenging enough? Try the selection of carnival-style games — each with a unique, sexy twist you won’t find at your average county fair.

Museums of any type, anywhere, make efforts to inform and enlighten their visitors and sex museums in Japan are no different. Well, “different” is a relative term — as is size. The remarkable variation in mammalian members is graphically displayed by one hihokan’s graphic display, arranged in order from rabbits to whales. Moby Dick indeed!!

Japanese culture, with its long and colorful history of fertility rites and ceremonies, is the main reason the country’s sex museums can offer such a varied smorgasbord of sex objects to public view.

Many people are familiar with local fertility festivals in which giant replica male organs (often painted bright pink) are paraded down the avenue, then rubbed or ridden by women seeking a boost in their baby-making powers. One would assume the leftover props are saved and collected, eventually finding their way to the nearest hihokan.

Regardless of how they acquired their carnal collections, Japan’s sex museums can offer visitors a unique, unforgettable, even educational experience — though I don’t think they’ll get many visits from classes on field trips (unless it’s a sex-ed class). This is one “Night at the Museum” that gets an “X” rating!

  4. Having lived in Japan, some years ago, I remember the first time our family went to the public baths. There was one area only for men, another only for women, an area for both sexes and finally, a area for families.
It took some time to get comfortable with all of this, however, after a short amount of time, it seemed fairly normal.
Read “Shogun” by James Clavell – it’s an eye opener for those who are ignorant to the ways of the Japanese. (Yes, there are other books – but Clavell’s is the easiest to read).

  5. Japan… seems like my kinda place! :)

  6. Much of one’s acceptance to many things varies by culture, Morgan. But I’m not so sure that I would want to bathe with a bunch of other people clothed or unclothed ;-)

  8. Though I am an Indian, I did not know that there was such a museum in India as well. Now, after reading this post, I managed to google out some info…
