Robot Acts as Wedding MC
When planning a wedding, the average Joe would typically select family members and dear friends for their wedding entourage and master of ceremonies. So for Seok Gyeong-Jae, one of the designers of Tiro the robot, it was a perfectly natural choice for Tiro to take the role of master of ceremonies for his wedding on Sunday for what its creators claimed as a world first.
Tiro the robot led ceremony for the wedding of Seok Gyeong-Jaeto to his bride at Daejeon, 78 miles (130 kilometers) south of Seoul in South Korea.
“This is Tiro, master of ceremonies for today’s wedding.” the robot — featuring a cone-shaped body, two arms and a dark-glassed face with eyes and a mouth of flashing lights — said in front of smiling guests.
The robot introduced the couple to the crowd in a male voice, let the couple bow to them as is custom and performed its programmed duties, reports Yahoo News.
Manufacturer Hanool Robotics claims it’s the first time a robot — whose value is placed at $215,000 US — has been used as master of ceremonies at a wedding.
After its marital duties, Tiro will be upgraded to perform various other functions, according to Hanool officials.
Keeping it in the family, additional small robots were also used at the ceremony to guide guests and provide performances. That alone would be worth the price of admission — figuratively speaking.
In South Korea, couples can hold a wedding ceremony in any location but must then register their marriage with authorities before it becomes legal. Certainly provides an interesting opportunity to opt out after saying ‘I do’ if getting cold feet after the wedding. Takers anyone?
South Korean robots have also been given harder tasks to tackle. Last month it was reported that a robot dubbed OFRO would be positioned as a school security guard in what was also claimed as a world first.
Additionally, last September government officials unveiled a high-tech, machine gun-toting sentry robot that could support troops along the heavily fortified border with North Korea.
