Welcome back!

Where there’s smoke there’s … Stoffel De Roover — photography artist extraordinaire. A self-taught photographer, Stoffel has mastered his modus operandi for his distinctive ‘Smoke Photography’. Much like the Rorschach’s ink blot test, each of us visualizes something different in it.

Alien Boss

Stoffel De Roover’s introduction to photography with an SLR camera progressed to the digital era, for which he soon lost interest in the craft due to limitations in digital photography. But once he advanced to DSLR, providing the best of both worlds, Stoffel’s interest was reborn, as was the dawn of Smoke Photography.

“I was looking in great detail at each picture, and like with clouds, tried to define what I was seeing. I would turn my head (and then just rotated the pictures as my neck was getting sour) to see these pictures from every angle, and that’s when I ‘found’ the picture ‘Smoke Induced Hallucination.” said Stoffel. “I saw a woman’s figure in the smoke. I edited it just a bit (levels, some cloning to remove excess smoke) to really bring out the essence.”

“I focused on ‘creatures’ or other recognizable shapes. In a later shoot of smoke pictures, I created the ‘Sorcerer’ and the ‘Smoke Creature – Black’. I experimented with additional editing techniques by mirroring layers and adding colors. I’ve recently added additional ‘substances’ to pictures with some interesting results.”

“Photography is my passion, and Smoke Photography is very addictive for me — it makes me enjoy the beauty of things, and lets me share what I see, or how I see things with other people.” he added.

Originally from Leuven, Belgium, 29 year old Stoffel De Roover currently lives in Montreal, Canada, where he moved to last summer from the South of France and earned his MSC, and previously lived and worked in the Netherlands, and Michigan, USA.

Stoffel was featured in SNAP magazine earlier this year, a photography magazine from the UK, and twice won monthly contests at PhotographyBlog for ‘Macro’ and ‘Shadows’ themes.

Stoffel De Roover’s website Lumendipity — derived from Lumen and serendipity — showcases his works where he offers his photography services as a photographer shooting landscapes, street life, photo shoots, events, and weddings. Stoffel also writes additional information on shoots including smoke photography on his blog. You can view more of his works at his photography gallery and smoke gallery, or contact him by email.

Stoffel aspires to have his works featured in galleries and exhibitions, so if you have the connections to do so for this remarkable photographer, he’d love to hear from you.

  1. WOW, those pics are absolutely amazing and it puts my photography to shame :(
Stoffel certainly deserves to have his work featured in galleries and exhibitions, it is a very creative way of using smoke images.
I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more about him in the future :)

  2. I am sure I have seen some of his smoke photos before, they are too distinct to be anything other than his. It is marvelous to find the talented photographer who created them. Incredible.
He did a nude group photo shoot in Melbourne, Australia – only 4000 though (18000 in Mexico city – wow).
    Thanks Deborah

  3. That stairway to heaven one looks like the South of France. Nice airport in fact.

  4. Sorry, Stairway to triumph

  5. Yes Colin, Stoffel’s smoke photography is very impressive, as well as creative to say the least. But he displays a lot of telent for his ‘standard’ form of photography as well IMO.

It may very well have been Stoffel’s work you’ve seen Sue, it’s not something I’d heard of prior to his contact. I was very ingtrigued when I saw his works.

As for the nude photography, that’s the work of Spencer Tunick. He’s earned world-wide recognition for it.

How interesting Jeremy. That’s one of the beauties of art, we each see something unique to our own perceptions :-)

  6. Thanks Deborah, and thanks all for your comments..
You’re quite right Jeremy, that shot (actually called Seaside Stroll, the spiral staircase is stairway to Triumph) was taken in Juan les Pins, about 20km from Nice airport! You’ve probably seen it from the plane, if not on the ground..

  7. My pleasure Stoffel :-)

    Oops, fixed the typo, sorry.

Seems that Jeremy has a sharp eye :-)

  8. I love Room with a View….incredible photography….and the compositions are excellent … :0

  18. extremly delicate pictures, the colours have been done wonderfully. The tequella plant gets mixed up with the aloe plant very often, it is a common mistake.

  19. yes i often get the two mixed up which didnt end up nicely as when i put tequella on, it would be awfully paiful!
love the pictures, i read about them in the metro on the way to college

  20. Harriet and Elcee, I’m not sure where you’re seeing anything referencing plants, but it’s not from this post.
