Welcome back!

Trekkie_Tony_AlleyneA Star Trek fan who turned his apartment into a replica of Star Trek Enterprise starship has sold it for a whopping $838,563 US — five times its market value.

Trekkie Tony Alleyne, spent two years and $59,185 US converting his one-bedroom studio apartment in Hinckley, Leicestershire, into a detailed replica of the Starship Enterprise Voyager’s flight deck.

He put his apartment up for sale on eBay a month ago with a guide price of $256,435 US to $98,640 US.

But it sold for about five times that amount — $838,563 US — when five Star Trek fans entered into a bidding war. That certainly beats the man that sold his imaginary friend on eBay for approximately $3,100 US last week.

The winning bid was made by a millionaire Birmingham businessman.

Mr. Alleyne started work on the apartment two years ago after his marriage broke down. It has molded wall panels, blue lighting and a “transporter room”.

Last February Mr. Alleyne filed for bankruptcy after running up debts of $327,462 US. Go figure. That’s a lot of spending outside your means.

He spent more than $59,185 US converting the apartment as well as $197,279 US on marketing his firm, 24th Century Interior Designs.

But despite going bankrupt, he redecorated the suite using income support payments. (???) How does one even become awarded that kind of palimony, let alone be able to keep every cent after filing bankruptcy?

  1. Deborah,

We need to put our heads together to figure out a way to turn some trash into treasure. If these people can turn a regular flat into a Star Trek bistro, then we certainly can come up with some similar and make a killing.

Jean Luc Picard, by the way, is one of my favorite Trek characters. Maybe because I still have a bit more hair on my crown then he does!

    Take care,
    MattK

  2. Well all I can say Deborah…is that they must pay a LOT of income support over there in the UK!!!!!

  3. Matt, it sure seems to be working for some of these individuals with creative ideas! I’m game if you are :-)

“Maybe because I still have a bit more hair on my crown then he does!” Too funny, haha! He’s one of my favs as well.

Kim, point me in the direction to a job that can afford to pay that kind of palimony to begin with, and I’ll be there!

  4. No disrespect to the guy, but if there were ever an argument for overhauling the ’social security’ system in the UK, this is it!

One of the reasons I left the place…..

Still, I’m sure that it makes citizens of other countries jealous, and there’s not many thing in the UK can do that!

  5. I don’t know if I see this as a failure of the social system or a brilliant tale of hard-nosed entrepreneurship. Great find.

  6. Well I find it extremely creative and rather ingenious, to make that kind of return on an investment.

Not only did he manage to make $$ selling his flat, but he gained some wide exposure to his interior design business in doing so.

  8. Being a trekker (original name of trekkies) fan and having the pleasure of watching the original series that debuted in 1966, I’m somewhat amazed that the Trekkies still live on. Who would have thought. I wonder if Roddenberry ever thought it would turn into such a success – even though there were only 79 original episodes. Hats off to Tony.

  11. I see people have lost all the morality and sell even friends on the web. Let’s sell relatives online. I offer my mom. What’s your bid? Abbey from condos in Toronto.

  12. IMAGINARY friend, Abbey…
I prefer Star Wars (however Super Star Destroyer control room would require hangar, not one bedroom condo…), but this one is perfect too! Elli from Toronto condos
