Suicidal Squirrels May Fear the Axe
Welcome back!
Routines of Suicidal Squirrels hamming it up as “100 Squirrels Kill Themselves” in the roles of live crash dummies, voluntary road kill, and bloody blown up heads may actually feel the razor-sharp edge of the axe come down upon them should Romanian authorities have their say.
“Suicidal Squirrels” is an animated series of 100 adorable little squirrels unwavering in their efforts to die — 100 squirrels, 100 episodes — all the while with a giggle and a smile on their tiny little faces.
The 1-minute black comedy cartoons are broadcast daily at 2 p.m. on the British-licensed channel AXN, which is seen on cable TV in Romania.
The Romanian regulatory body for television broadcasting is shocked and up in arms, saying on Thursday it would make an official protest to the European Commission to have the cartoons banned. But Romanian authorities have no control over it, as AXN obtained its license from Britain and is thereby governed by British broadcasting rules.
The National Audiovisual Council disagreed that the cartoon was damaging for children to watch, and AXN declined to reach an agreement with Romanian regulators.
“Some people may say this is an overreaction, but I don’t think that such programs would be broadcast in Britain at 2 in the afternoon.” said Gelu Trandafir, a member of the broadcasting council.
The grim but humorous cartoons are also broadcast on cable TV in countries across Europe including Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Moldova.

Charlotte *thinks* kamikazi !!
I think …better squirrels than humans …and maybe this is a very black message of virtual warning…or perhaps awareness !!
will Digg Deborah !!
Is this one way of saying “the squirrels have gone nuts?”
Or might this be a subliminal message, one that pertains to suicide bombers who gladly die for their cause with smiles on their faces? The smiles signify their meeting 72 virgins in heaven?
Aaaaarrrgh! Who wants to have 72 virgin squirrels for eternity? –Durano, done!
I think this requires parental guidance for children who watching, for it can influence their mind.
I think kamikazi squirrels has a better ring to it, Kim
And thanks
“Squirrels gone nuts” … hehe, good one Durano
Shudder the thought of subliminal messages for suicide bombers though! And 72 virgin squirrels? You always crack me up
I tend to agree with you Mark. Even the old Bugs Bunny cartoons had some dark humor about them which were never taken seriously, but they didn’t go quite as extreme to the dark side.
I would wonder if the cartoons were aimed at adults or children. There’s enough violence junk already, I think we need to shelter this stuff from the little ones.
It appears to me to be directed more to the adult audience, Jaki. The main concern was that it airs during mid-day when children are easily able to view them.
What a strange and cutely violent cartoon. I’d be concerned too if this was airing at the time my children were watching TV.
