The Sun in 3D from NASA on Monday
Welcome back!
NASA will be releasing 3D images of the sun for the first time on Monday, taken by a pair of spacecraft called STEREO (NASA’s Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory).
STEREO consists of two space-based observatories – one ahead of Earth in its orbit and the other trailing behind. Scientists will be able to see the structure and evolution of solar storms as they blast from the Sun and move out through space.
Wired Science reports that you’ll be able to witness magnetic loops and plumes leaping out from your computer monitor, as long as you’re using 3D glasses.
The images will be displayed on big screens at museums and science centers in the U.S., on TV, and posted on the internet. Here is a list of locations.
Also be on the look out for a meteor shower this weekend as Earth enters the tail of Comet Thatcher. SpaceWeather says it’s called the Lyrid meteor shower because the bits of incandescent comet dust appear to come from the constellation Lyra. Look during the dark hours before dawn on Sunday April 22nd, and Monday April 23rd — a shooting star overhead should appear every 5 minutes or so. (NASA photo)
Where can you buy a pair of 3D glasses? Here’s some references for you.
But if you want to make your own pair of 3D glasses, here’s what you’ll need:
Materials
Oaktag (sturdy poster board)
Scissors
Clear tape
Basic pattern for glasses PDF at STEREO
Sheets of red and blue acetate available at art supply stores
Or you can create your own red / blue 3D images to print or look at on a computer screen using a digital camera and image processing software. STEREO explains how to use Adobe Photoshop, but you should be able to get the same results using similar programs by playing around with the tools and settings.

This stuff really amazes me, being able to see the universe like we have never seen it before. One day we will travel to other stars, now that would be truly amazing.
