When Pet Owners Go Too Far — Part 2
It could only happen in Vegas — a canine competition taken to the max. Poodles in the super ‘bling bling’ creative grooming mash-up — the zenith of the Super Groom 2007 in Las Vegas — were sculpted with sheers, bleached, braided, beaded, feathered and fluffed, most beyond anything recognizable from their former selves.

Pooches got their freak on painted with Blo Pens — markers that simulate the effects of airbrushing — using non-toxic temporary food dyes. Super Groom 2007 saw 15 dogs transformed into everything from a Harley Doggyson to brightly colored butterflies, feathered Indian chiefs, and pirates at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas.
Myra Macias of Texas won first place (pictured above) by transformed her standard poodle, Peach Cobbler, into a motorcycle with the theme Poodle Rider in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Entrants and onlookers came from far and wide, as distant as Australia, Malaysia and Japan, reports Freep.

Katherine Ray was 2nd with her depiction of a horse sculpted into the side of her poodle’s fur.

They beat Carmon Baker’s dog Missy, who looked like mutt-on dressed as lamb with fishnet stockings, high-heeled pixie boots and a powder pink top. “Let me put the hoochy in your poochy.” said Carmon of Borger, Texas, just prior to being eliminated.

Deanise Stoops of Sunset Beach, California, turned her dog Jada into the character Jack Sparrow including a peg leg, a beaded goatee, hat and more.

Sandy Hartness of Yucaipa Valley, California, turned her standard poodle into a Ninja Turtle named Leonardoodle. She took 1st place last year by transforming her dog into a dragon.

Sarah Reynolds’ precious pooch was transformed into the Grinch Who Stole Christmas.
Is this taking pet ownership too far?

This is a priceless post! The faces of the owners, the get-up and colors of the dogs…ROFL! Vegas was the perfect place for such a contest!
I agree, I noticed the looks on the pet owners’ faces myself Kuanyin
How do you manage to find these stories every day? I love the visuals on this one. It would be great fun to be in the audience with a camera.
Imagine the time, effort and money that goes into this.
The one with the mask that is supposed to be a turtle (?) is beyond belief.
Hours and hours of surfing David
The Ninja Turtle is pretty bizarre. How these people even come up with their concepts is beyond me.
notice how all the owners are ugly/fat, no lives, no guys to fu** em
The only thing that is funny is that you are probably obese yourself.
These are not happy animals by any stretch. There is a limit- luckily most of the owners look even more ridiculous than their pets!
Karma Rocks!
This borders on animal abuse. These people are sick
most the owners looked very angry,
the turtle is the one i liked it should have one
poor pets… i’ll never do that
wow Deborah
how bizarre !!!!
the turtle dog is unbelievable……
they don’t look that happy at being dressed up …I remember having a kitten that I dressed up in baby clothes….(when I was a child)….happy kitty…not….
great post …will digg
These people are stupid. Yes, why don’t you get a dog and dress it up like an asshole. Brilliant.
This is horrible, poor animals.
What’s up with some of the owners’ facial expressions? Some of the “extreme makeover” hang on the verge of being ridiculous. The Ninja Turtle is pretty bizarre, but nonetheless very creative!
Bonus points to owners who also dress up…
This is why I only date Asian women.
Just by looking at the owners you’ll understand why. They’ve got no chance in life whatsoever, the only way to get any attention is through their inhumanely sheared and dyed dogs.
Poor dogs, not only do they have to deal with burning blistered skin from the chemicals, they have to eat peanut butter from some fugly beast’s privates. If i were one of those dogs i would run into oncoming traffic, or chew on the TV’s power cord.
Pitty dogs,we can’t see their mind,i think, they should not be victim, they should have their right.
Thanks everyone for all of your comments.
I’m actually relieved to see that the concensus overwhelmingly agrees with how I viewed this. Although as far as we know, no animals were physcially harmed, but they are definitely not happy. Even the owners appear unhappy.
What is to gain by this? 15 minutes of fame for something as dubious as this? Is it really worth it to put your ‘best friend’ through this ordeal?
i want the turtle!
… that’s sick!
This seems like dog abuse to me . Why don’t these people “get a life” Those dogs should not have been subjected to hours and hours of discomfort just to satisfy the gross need of attention the owners lack ..
GET A STUFFED ANIMAL OR PSYCH HELP
i feel sorry for those dogs.
poor dogs…
btw, what is this girl thinking with her “pirates of the carribean”-outfit ? did she have a look at her b**bs falling out of her dress? she should consider her look ..well.. at least 1 min. before going out! unbelivable..brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…
i’m not surprised all the dog’s owners are fat and miserable-looking. what a bunch of sad bastards they are. Get a f*cking LIFE!!!
This is sick, sick, sick. I am English and live in the UK and fortunately I have never seen anything like this over here. The more I hear about the US, the less I want to visit. How about dumbing up instead of dumbing down??? Yeuch, yeuch, yeuch.
i think this is a fun competition idea…but it cannot be fun for the dogs at all. its ridiculous, almost as bad as using a dog as an accessory *cough* paris hilton *cough*
Bleaching and dying dog fur? Oh please! these are animals not toys. You Americans are “sick puppies” to even think of doing this to your dogs, never mind ACTUALLY doing it and from the look on the faces of some of these owners, very sick puppies indeed. Yuck
This is awful – why are American’s so messed up?
It would only be fair to have the owners styled in the same manner–you know, shave and dye their heads to match those poor dogs. Animals don’t exist to entertain us.
Thanks everyone. As Disgusted mentioned, these dogs have gone through hours of discomfort. I would think that the bleaching would be irritating to their skin as well, having been in the hair industry in the past.
Dodgy, although this was held in the US, entrants came world-wide for this competition
Lynn, that’s exactly it, animals aren’t for our own amusement. They deserve much more respect than this.
Only in America! Oh dear.
this stuff is hilarious, those dog will be well loved, anyone that can be arsed enough to take their dog to a show like that will treat them really well! lucky pups, id love to have everything i ever wanted just for dressing like a prat occasionally!
turtle shoulda won most definately!
those poor dogs
I think this is disgusting and these people should be reported for animal abuse…the animals do not look happy..yes they are probably loved but only so their pathetic owners can dress them up and make themselves feel good!!!Very sad people..
I can’t understand why people would do this, what was the prize? And what were they judged on, breed manners and conformation or just the fact they had a load of dye on them?
que ridiculez!!!!
I so want to do that where do it get one!!!!!!!!!
every owner fat, mean and middle-aged.
Stupid people!.. great dogs!!
(the dogs are more intelligent than your owners)
All the yankees are ridiculous.. doing stupid things like this… a$$ holes!
This is far to be funny… This type of events shouldn’t be allowed at all and they should be prosecuted… This is an other example of animal abuse…
Sandra – from Barcelona
Habría que hacérselo a los dueños.
Pobrecitos perros.
So sad.. Can someone say animal cruelity.
I sincerely doubt that the dogs themselves actually care that much -I’ve yet to meet any variety of dog, much less a purebred ‘toy’ breed, with any sense of personal dignity- but these people clearly have far, far too much time on their hands.
I can’t believe it! Actually, I don’t want to believe it. If you people want a circus buy a clown don’t do such horrible things to your dogs!
I know one of the dogs in these photos, as well as her owner…on one hand, I think the whole thing is a little ridiculous; but on the other, I’ve got to step up and defend the owner/groomer. These folks seriously love their dogs, and aren’t cruel to them–the one dog of the bunch pictured that I know gets even more attention than usual when it’s all dressed up, which is something she simply adores!
Cruelty to pets is the neighbor who leaves their dog tied up outside all day, the owner who doesn’t make sure that their pets are spayed/neutered/immunized, or the jackass who abandons animals when they’re not longer small, or cute, or well-behaved, or young. It isn’t the (perhaps overzealous) groomer that takes their pet with them everywhere, socializes it, spends lots of time with it, and makes sure that it is well-groomed. In this case, weirdly groomed. But anyway. Give the ladies a break.
Thanks Me, it’s great to hear the other side of the coin coming from someone who knows what goes on first-hand.
Thanks Deborah.
Having said that, I should also add that no one is EVER going to get near my dog with goofy costumes and “non-toxic temporary food dyes”.
You won’t see it happening to mine either, Me
They due have pride issues, I know that. Our small dog has had her tumble now and then when she’s jumping onto the sofa. She gets quite indignant when we’ve laughed at her
OMG, this is so wrong. Isn’t there anyone out there protecting these poor little creatures?
Let’s not be silly. It’s non-toxic food coloring, not dye. It’s all for fun. It’s a shame some of the “animal lovers” that have posted comments aren’t people lover’s too. Such mean and stupid comments.
They are white or light dogs, not bleached.
It appears they are all in good health to me. They don’t look scared, skinny, or tortured.
I bet they love the attention.
And the turtle should have won!!!
Oh, an as to Dodgy Geezer, please stay in the UK. A dozen people choose to playfully groom their pets, and that’s what you choose to condemn the entire nation for? Dimwit.
although it probably isn’t their favorite thing in the world, in order for anyone to do this to a dog, they have to be very well trained and that takes a lot of love. all these people shouting animal cruelty probably bring their dog to the groomer very matted. i wouldn’t do it to my dog but i wouldn’t shout cruelty. want to see cruelty? go down to the local animal shelter and check out all the abandoned and abused dogs, or drive around your neighborhood and see all the “happy” dogs chained to trees. as a groomer i do know that some dogs actually enjoy the attention they get when being groomed.

I have to say, the one that really throws me off, is the ninja turtle dog. Come on, that poor dog has to be going through an identity crisis.
It really ticks me off that there are people out there that think dyeing a dog is cruelty to the animal. I am a professional groomer. These competitions are for the most part in association with the National Groomers Association. There is nothing harmful about dying a dog as long as it is left to the professionals. And trust me there are no amateurs in these photos. Creating these looks take a ton of time and effort and mostly talent. A professional would never use a dog in competition that didn’t enjoy being there. These are not clips that the dogs stay in all the time. Also there is no bleaching of the hair it would burn the dogs skin. So before you judge so harshly maybe you should take into consideration that these groomers have spent years learning all aspects of the pet industry. Those of you that have such bad opinions of this art are probably the same ones that bring your dog in to get groomed once a year, swear that you have brushed “fluffy” everyday and expect your groomer to de-mat the poor thing. Then get pissed cause “fluffy” ends up having to be shaved down. Now thats animal cruelty!!!
Ok the first one is ridiculous (they all are are but the first one is almost painful). In general I usually feel bad for poodles.
The Jack Sparrow one is cool. Hopefully they (the pets) enjoy being there…
I have been grooming dogs for almost 5 years and what all of you that think this is cruel should understand is that these dogs are started at a very, very young age to be trained to be groomed and that most (i won’t say all of them) actually enjoy it because it is there job… It is like a sheep dog enjoys herding sheep because it was trained that way….someday i hope to perfect my skill enough to be able to do things ike this because I look at it as a form of art…none of you understand how unbelievably complex and hard it is to groom a dog like that… I think it is awesome
can’t believe what some people will do to their pets they need to learn some kitten care or dog care i meant to say
Haha.. that was a funny (and disturbing) read!

this whole thing screams of “I HAVE NO LIFE!” seriously, WHAT THE BLUE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE WOMEN?
Pure awesome!
I just have to say that I can understand why some people may think that this is cruel to the animals, but as a professional groomer of about 7 years I can honestly say that there is nothing cruel about it! I own a standard poodle who is now 7 months old and I have had her since she was 6 weeks old. She has gotten a bath every Sunday since I got her and she also has her hair retouched and reshaved where needed every other Sunday! She absolutely LOVES it! She loves the attention that she gets all to herself for those couple of hours every Sunday. I own 4 dogs (2 English Bulldogs, 1 Miniature Dachshund and the Standard Poodle) and I also work full time grooming out of my home. I love being a groomer and the biggest reason is because I love seeing the personalities of a dog change after they have been groomed. You can really tell that they feel good about themselves. They feel better and they are getting more attention from people because of how cute they look and how soft they are and how good they smell. THEY KNOW IT!!! I love to see that dog come over here and get all groomed up and when they are done they have a whole different walk, they are more playful, they are just all around HAPPY! And when the owner gets here to pick them up and they are hugging and kissing the dog, the dog gets even more excited because Mom & Dad are thrilled with the way their baby looks and smells. I guarantee that the dog is getting more attention in his/her home that day than it did in the last week when they were dirty, stinky, matted, etc.
If my Standard Poodle wasn’t solid black I would be dyeing her also. The dye that is used to do this is actually made for dogs and is all natural and VERY safe for the dogs skin and health. Some of the “airbrush” effects that you see on some of these dogs is done with blo pens (wich are non-toxic because they are made for kids!) and that doesn’t even get all the way to the skin. Poodles have a very thick, dense coat which is what makes it possible to do all of these creative cuts on them. Poodles also don’t have FUR, they have HAIR which is why it will just keep growing as long as you let it! Do any of you dye your hair? Why do you do it? Because it makes you feel better about yourself? Because you get more attention? Dogs are color blind so they don’t care that they (or any other dog) are green or purple, they just know that they feel better about themselves and that they are getting all of the attention that they want and need!! My poodle is one of the most socialized dogs that I know BECAUSE of all of the attention that she receives every time we walk out of our house and that is just because of all of the different haircuts that she gets. All of the kids in my neighborhood LOVE her, can you imagine if she had a lot of bright colors in her coat?!
These groomers are VERY talented. I have seen several people say that they must not have a life, but that is far from the truth. I have a husband, 4 daughters, and 4 dogs and work full-time out of my house as a groomer. For these groomers this is a Career, A Hobby, and a Passion! At least they can say that they love what they do and are very good at it! And if they have the patience to make a poodle look like this can you imagine what they can do for somebody that just wants their shih-tzu in a “puppy cut” or their Schnauzer in a “Schnauzer cut”?! I wish I could be making the kind of money that they are making because of their talent and their love for animals!!
This takes real talent, time, dedication, and Love to do this kind of work and I think that they should be appreciated for it and not criticized for it. You should be criticizing the people that are too lazy to brush their own dogs once a week and let them get matted so that they are in pain when they walk, or the people that won’t even have their dogs nails trimmed so that their feet end up deformed, or the people that won’t clean their dogs ears and they end up with constant painful ear infections, or the people that let their dogs get infested with fleas and ticks! I call that cruelty!!
I agree with Kim. I could see how this would seem borderline abusive if you don’t fully understand the process. Coloring a dog can be very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing, but every single one of those woman is a trained professional. “Blo Pens — markers that simulate the effects of airbrushing — using non-toxic temporary food dyes” The colors are safe and non-toxic. In fact, the dyes the groomers use are at least as safe as (and in the case of the blo pens, even safer) than the color we use to color our own hair.
I say congratulations to these women – it takes a LOT of skill and hard work to achieve those grooms.
For those of you concerned about animal abuse, perhaps you should be more worried about the puppy mills, neglect, and dog fighting that is occurring all over the country. I also agree with another poster – maybe the “dog lovers” could learn to be more kind to people…
FUcking you patetics!!!!!!!!!!! its cruelity!!!!
I think there are a lot worse things that go on in the world. I wouldn’t let anybody do anything this extreme to my dogs, but this sort of frivolity is the least of my concerns. Is it silly? Wasteful? Childish? Yes. But I think calling it cruel is a huge exaggeration. Any chicken, pig or cow in a factory farm or slaughterhouse would trade places with any of these pooches in a New York minute! If you eat meat (and I don’t) you have no business calling this cruelty.
These people ought to be put out of their misery. And the poor mutts should be adopted by normal people who let them lead a dogs life.
This really makes me sick to my stomach!
Just like parents dragging their toddlers around from pagent to pagent. SICKENING!!

This should be considered some form of animal abuse. Dogs are not objects they’re living things and shouldn’t be treated that way. Let the dog be a dog and find something else to paint pictures on! There are plenty of non-living things to pain on that won’t have to suffer horrible haircuts and stained fur for weeks after.
