Worlds Longest Phone Call Title Held by a Man
Welcome back!
Never let it be said that women now hold the title for talking the most on the telephone. Neither does the record belong to your teenage kid. Tony Wright broke the record on Friday for the world’s longest continuous phone call ever recorded — and he was still talking.
Tony Wright, from Penzance, Cornwall, talked on the phone via internet (VOIP) from his home to a Tesco store in London for 40 hours — and he was still going strong.
The previous world record for the longest phone call was for 39 hours, 18 minutes and 24 seconds on November 3, 2005. But yes, it was held in part by a woman, Sandra Kobel and Stephen Hafner, from Switzerland.
Not willing to settle for his previous world record for sleeplessness by staying awake for 11 days in May this year — as part of his research into human sleep — Tony Wright broke the record for the longest phone call shortly after 2 a.m. Friday while talking to Jenny Barnard, of north London.
His marathon for the record ran for nearly 2 days when he first spoke to TV weather forecaster Sian Lloyd. Hundreds of people took turns in 20 minute time slots to chat with Wright to help him beat the record, reports Metro
“I have now got my own little piece of world record history.” said Ms Barnard, who was speaking to Tony Wright at the time the record was broken.
Topics of conversation ranged from heartbreaks, heartaches and romance to psychobabble, and from stomach mucus to the approaching Led Zeppelin concert.
“Luckily, I do not have to worry about a huge phone bill because we are using Tesco internet phones, meaning that this mammoth call is free.” said Wright.
Tony Wright said that he had primed himself prior to the marathon phone call by exercising his vocal cords for weeks. Apparently, his efforts paid off.
Tesco committed to donate about $200 US (£100) to the British Red Cross for every hour Wright spent talking.
It might appear as a ‘call’ for attention to hold more than 1 world record, but Wright had previous interests prior to attempting his world record for sleeplessness. He had conducted 15 years of research into human sleep, and claims each side of the human brain requires a different amount of sleep.
“With appropriate preparation, it is possible to stay awake and remain functional for long periods.” he said.
Prior to his record attempt, he had executed more than 100 experiments with sleep deprivation lasting between 2 and 8 days.
During his record attempt he said he had one ‘near sleep experience’ and found the most difficult thing to do was writing his website diary while sleep-deprived.
