Worlds Smallest Dog Brandy
Welcome back!
Not even a match for a pop can in size, Heaven Sent Brandy is the world’s smallest dog — in length, that is. But we don’t care how this little gem made her claim to fame, the diminutive Chihuahua is just too cute not to cover.
The pint-sized pooch — a mere 6 inches (15.2 centimeters) in length from tail to nose — was awarded the record for world’s smallest dog in length by Guinness World Records on January 31 2005. Weighing only 2 pounds, Brandy still holds on to her crown, as she hasn’t grown a fraction since she won her title nearly 3 years ago.
With legs the size of lollipops, the 4 year old canine’s lungs are so small she can’t even bark.
Owner Paulette Keller Florida got Brandy when she was only 9 months old. “When I got Brandy, I had just lost my previous Chihuahua who was 14 years old.” she says.
“I spoke to a breeder who I had met at a dog show the year before and she told me about Brandy. She said that she was so tiny that she wouldn’t be bred but when I saw her, I just fell in love with her.”
“With a dog like this, you have to be very careful. She can’t jump on to or off anything because her legs are so tiny.” says Paulette. She doesn’t allow the dog on the furniture for fear she’d jump off and break a leg. And to keep the precious pooch warm, Paulette carries her around in a sheepskin-lined purse.
“Walking her is OK but when there are kids around, all they want to do is pick her up and she can get frightened.”
“I have even managed to take her on domestic flights without being noticed. I have a small bag that she can slip into and, because she doesn’t make a sound, no one notices her. I have taken her to Seattle, Chicago, New York, [and] Nevada. When we are on the plane, I just take her out and place her underneath my seat. No-one has any idea she is there.”
Brandy may have free reign of the house, but she also shares the abode with Tyson, a 1 year old boxer. “She has a kennel and a bed that she shares with Tyson, and they get on great.” says Paulette.
“She is so small, she can fit through the small gaps in a wire fence but she knows to stay where she is. She is really lively and she will run around the house. Sometimes I can’t find her and I get very scared but she will often just turn up hiding under the couch.”
Brandy is on strict diet of dry dog food because of her tiny size — the smallest Paulette can get — and mashed up scrambled egg because she can’t fit whole pieces in her mouth.
Bath time is also a sensitive procedure due to her fragile frame. “I have to wash her in the sink and I have to be very careful not to be too rough with her and her ears.” says Paulette.
“Brandy is very healthy — she came from a breeder who breeds show-quality animals. But Brandy was a fluke. She came from a litter of 5 and when she was born, she was just miniature. When she was only 1, she had a rabies shot and she nearly died because of the reaction she had to it.” adds Paulette.
Even though Brandy has made celebrity status appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show, Paulette maintains she had no idea Brandy would become so famous.
“When I first laid eyes on her, I thought ‘wow’ — I had never seen a dog so small.” she says.
“Nine months later, the breeder phoned me and said I should look at the Guinness Book Of Records because she thought Brandy was smaller than the world’s smallest dog. I got the application form and filled it out and then a few months later I got a call from the Guinness people who confirmed she was the smallest.
“Everything changed after that and Brandy and I went on Good Morning America, Oprah and The Jay Leno show. It was amazing but I would have never had picked Brandy to get famous — it was because she was so adorable.”
About Chihuahuas
The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world — named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, where it was discovered in 1850.
Boo Boo, a 4 inch (10.16 centimeter) tall long-haired female Chihuahua who weighs only 1.5 pounds (675 grams) was named the World’s Smallest Living Dog by the Guinness Book of World Records in May 2007. Records are determined by height from toe to shoulder. Boo Boo, who weighed only one ounce at birth, succeeded another Chihuahua named Ducky who stood 4.9 inches.
Their height varies more than within many other breeds, typically between 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 centimeters) at the withers, though some grow as tall as 12 to 15 inches (30 to 38 centimeters).
Chihuahuas are prized for their devotion, ferocity, and personality. They’re often stereotyped as high-strung, though it’s been proven that correct training and socialization can make them an outstanding companion animal.
These dogs aren’t well suited as small children’s pets because of their size, temperament, and tendency to bite when frightened — it’s recommended that children be school aged or older before bringing in a Chihuahua as a pet.
Many Chihuahuas focus their devotion on one person, becoming overly jealous of that person’s human relationships — however, it can be diminished through socialization. They have a ‘clannish’ nature, often preferring the companionship of Chihuahuas over other dogs.
Chihuahuas seem to have no concept of their own size and may fearlessly confront larger animals, which can result in injury.
This breed requires expert veterinary attention in birthing and dental care. They’re also known for their moleras — a soft spot in their skulls. Chihuahuas are the only breed of dog to be born with an incomplete skull. The molera does fill in with age, but great care needs to be taken during the first 6 months until the skull is fully formed.
Although figures often vary, the average lifespan for a Chihuahua is between 8 to 18 years.

God, I love this dog! Have I told you I used to have a Terra Nova (Newfoundlander)? Anyway, after I lost him I promised myself I’d never go for a big dog again. Small dogs have problems too, but you can carry them when they are sick.
I cannot have pets where I live now, it’s a rental. But I intend to buy a house soon and then… chihuahua is top of my list. They are fascinating little creatures… y ¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!
What an adorable animal! She’s hardly bigger than a hamster! I’ve heard of “lap-dogs,” but she is a “pocket-dog!”
Your blog is quite interesting. I’m looking for the sign-up for the RSS feed, but I don’t see it. ????
You are very much mistaken. This is in fact a common specimen of the North American rodent family
No Mig, you haven’t mentioned your dog, but so sorry to hear that about him. Some rentals will permit dogs if they’re a small lap-dog.
We have a little shitzhu and a German Sheppard that’s 13 years old. The Sheppard is having great difficulties walking, and getting up … he’s quickly losing control of his hind legs. It’s not hip dysplasia. Other than that, he’s perfectly healthy, and he’s not in pain. But we’ve thrown area rugs throughout the house, as he slips and falls while walking on the hardwood floors.
For some reason he wants to park himself in the few small areas where there isn’t a rug and can’t get up without someone helping him up. At 120 pounds, it’s impossible for me. I pulled my back muscles yesterday trying to help him, as I was the only one home. When he has to go, he has to go now
We’ll never get another large dog after this, for the very reason you mentioned … small dogs can be picked up if they’re ill.
I’m actually quite partial to the long-haired Chihuahuas
But many of these small breeds are becoming very popular due to celebrities that own them, and VERY expensive — some more than $2,000 for what would have cost about $500 a year ago!
Haha, a pocket dog — good anaology Lynda
And thanks, great to hear you enjoy it here. The RSS link is the big orange button at the very top of the right sidebar
Hahaha, I’m sure you’re not alone in that sentiment, Webrunner
Is that really the smallest? I am confused.

Pistongear, Brandy is the smallest dog in terms of length. But Boo-Boo is the smallest overall.
That is ADORABLE!! I love the picture walking both dogs! That is great!
The photo certainly emphasizes how teeny Brandy is, Baby
Oh my gosh– what a tiny, cute little dog!
Aww this is so cute! im so tempted to get a dog like this!
Indeed, Snitterdog
You’re not alone, Dog Training, so am I
What an adorable dog! Thanks for sharing her story!
Keep posting and I will keep coming back!
Wow, I have seen squirrels bigger than that in my back yard! I love learning about different dog breeds. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks Jason, glad you enjoyed it
No doubt, Online, she’s tiny, but utterly adorable
Deborah, I forgot to tell you that I cannot believe the dog can’t compare to a pop can. haha, definitely adorable. what kind of dogs do you have? I have a lab.
That’s how she made her claim to fame, Online, being even smaller than a pop can
Labs are wonderful dogs
We have a German Sheppard that’s a retired police dog, and a Shitzhu, the latter of which is my little baby that I sometimes use as my avatar on sites. We’ve had her for 10 years, and she still melts my heart each time I look at her.
Wow that sure is incredible! So cute. I bet a dog like that doesn’t need much exercise.
oh my gosh sooooooo adorable can i have it lol……ps if u have runescape accounts send it to kangaroo_shannon@hotmail.com
Great photos! It’s always comical seeing big and tiny dogs right beside each other. Now the hard part is training them because they usually have such different personalities. Often times the little guy is way more aggressive than the big dog!
For tips on dog training and puppy training check out Bark Busters!
I can’t believe how SMALL the dog is. Makes the pop can look HUGE! I guess its one way to save on dog food.

sorry, i believe i have your dog beat. i have one that is only 4.9 inches tall, and i fight daily to keep her weight up to 13 ounces. she has to eat every 2 hours, or she has the low blood sugar issue, like all chihuahuas. but she is 4 months old, and i know she has to be a year to be crowned. i know it is great accomplishment to care for them at this size. so i do not take that away from you, but i believe i will be on your heels in no time.
good luck, and i hope she will live forever as we wish they all could.
thank you for your time,
teri lea
Teri,

Deborah, they are so cute, I was told to go check out this site cuz I have a tiny dog, he is smaller then Boo Boo, he is all most 3 1/2 in tall and weighs 13 oz he is now 8 mo’s old, and I also have to work hard to keep the weigh on. The vet say’s he is healthy and everything’s seems to be working great, by the time he was 3 mo’s he already knew about 15 tricks and now he knows more. Don’t know if I would do the world record thing though I here a lot of negative things, how has the experience been for you? great site !

Hello
My name is sara and I came across your site while researching small dogs. I have a poodle hwo is one of the smartest I have ever known . I recently adopted a yorkie who is as sweet and as good as gold. She is 4 months old and weighs nearly 2 pounds. It looks so funny when I walk my black 20 pound poodle with this little yorkie. People say omg thats the smallest dog I have ever seen. So as well as having a celebrity dog who is known in my town for his big brain, I am also known as the lady with the tiny yorkie. The nice thing is that the small dog is so easy to care for. She eats so little, sleeps in my bed with my poodle and is pooped out after an hr long walk. My poodle on the other hand will walk for hrs and nevr get tired.
I love your blog .
Aw, she’s soooo cuuuuute! It’s adorable when people screw with an animal’s genetics so much for a “trend” that the poor animals can’t even function normally anymore! But at least Paris Hilton can carry a dog in her purse and we can all squeal about how cute they are, so that makes it all worthwhile. *eye roll*
that is one TINY LITTLE DOG

She is very cute though, and I’m not usually a fan of small dogs.
