Welcome back!

PandaIt seems there’s no end to the fixations with animal poo recently. (Don’t ask me why, I merely bring the news to you.) I reported about the craze for Cat Poo Coffee earlier this month. Now I bring news of another sort — a zoo in China is selling Panda poo as souvenirs, and it’s proving to be very lucrative.

The Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base, in Sichuan province, China, has developed a money-making scheme to rid the zoo of the droppings which once used to be a costly expense. Staff cleans up nearly a ton of excrement after their 40 pandas daily, which are fed on a diet of bamboo.

‘We used to spend at least 6,000 yuan a month to get rid of the droppings but now they can be lucrative.’ said Jing Shimin, assistant to the director, reports Metro.

A local handicraft company is producing the souvenirs, including Olympic-themed sculptures with ‘athletic pandas performing various Olympic sports’ and even picture frames. How would you like to be the sorry sot that handcrafts these ‘carvings’?

“They don’t smell too bad because 70 percent of the dung is just remains of the bamboo that the pandas are unable to digest.’ Jing added.

The process involves drying and sterilizing the dung at 300 degrees Celsius (572 Fahrenheit) before they’re fashioned.

PandaAnd it’s not the first time that panda poop has been used as raw material — Chiang Mai zoo in Thailand reported last November that they were creating paper items as souvenirs from their pandas’ waste.

Pandas excrete vast amounts of bamboo pulp that they’re unable to digest. So the zookeepers have converted the poop into paper taken from a traditional method used for making it from mulberry trees.

‘We know that any kind of pulp can be used to make paper, so we have applied the 2,000-year techniques of making paper from mulberry tree in this rural neighborhood to bamboo pulp from panda dung.’ said the zoo’s Prasertsak Buntrakoonpoontawee.

The zoo said they were creating souvenirs such as greetings cards, fans and bookmarks, which netted around 300,000 baht ($9,000 US) in sales last year.

PandaWhy not run with the zaniness even further? The Thai zoo also announced plans to help their pandas with their breeding efforts by showing them panda porn, providing them with sex education classes.

Chuang Chuang, a six-year-old male, has been introduced to ‘panda porn’ in attempt to help him to breed with Lin Hui, a five-year-old female.

“They don’t know how to mate, so we need to show him how.” a spokesman said. “Chuang Chuang will be shown the videos on a large screen when he might be feeling amorous.”

‘We’ll play the video at the most comfortable and intimate time for him, perhaps after dinner.’ he added, in hopes that Chuang Chuang would use the techniques on Lin Hui.

The two have been living together at the Chiang Mai zoo since arriving from China in 2003, without ever properly doing the wild thing.

Interesting article. If you find out that someone is looking to buy dog poop, please let me know. Whenever I clean up after my (big) dog, I think about the money I’d make if someone would just buy the stuff. Haha.
